Thanks to capitalism, when your doctor tells you you require a kidney transplant to survive, you no longer can be certain if you actually need a kidney transplant or your doctor simply needs a new speedboat. Nice.

To clarify that. If I receive a very hostile, very rule-breaking PM, and I post that in public, I get warned for it. We are all responsible for the content of our own posts, even if someone else wrote it. (This has always been the rule.)

So if Person A sends Person B a rule-breaking PM, and Person B decides to post it in public, Person B is responsible for bringing the content of the PM in public, responsible for the content of his own post.

However, if you receive numerous 'serious' death threats, or messages of a harassing nature, to name something, you can talk to the Administration about it. Maybe they can do something.

Re: PM rules.

okay, but say a person is offended by a (would be rule breaking if posted in public) PM.
does the rules cover that?
i would hazard to think so.

b. Profanity
The use of profanity on the SGW forums is prohibited at all times. This means swearing, cursing and vulgarity. This includes the use of masking. SGW is a family orientated game and as such the language used must be suitable for children.

the PM system is part of the forum.
there is no report function on PMs.
what would be the recommended course of action?

Re: PM rules.

the problem with PMs is that they cannot be controlled...

the only practically possible policy (to some degree unfortunately), is the one Juliette described...

report it in private, to a mod, or block the offender, or both, would be my advice. :-)

I'm sure that depending on the seriousness and volume of the PMs that the admins may choose to do something about it.

Re: PM rules.

if a user is seriously and repeatedly misusing the system, we may choose to disable it for that user, but it is not something we would do lightly...

You can put them on your "Foe" list, then you will see a nice red square (depending on your layout) next to the PM.. so you know not to open it.

Re: PM rules.

this is a copy from the permissions page on your account:

setting: Can send private messages Yes

(we used your account, since that was quickest to access... don't worry, we didn't change anything...)

so the answer is, yes, we can prevent users from sending PMs... but if we do, they wont be able to send any PMs at all...

Re: PM rules.

Thinking outside the box....... another option is to create a "rule".

I just tested this rule on myself and it works.

Create a rule in the Private Message section so that any PM received from a particular user is automatically deleted.

What will happen when that particular person sends you a PM, it will show on the forum that you have a new PM. When you go to your inbox there will be no new message. It will have been deleted. This will tell you that it was the person you set up the rule for that sent you a PM because unlike someone sending you a PM and deleting it before you read it, it does not show the message saying that it had been removed.

However, for the person that sent it, it would appear in their sent items which would indicate to them that you have read their message. As you didn't because it was deleted, and therefore you don't reply or anything, they will eventually think you are ignoring them and give up. When in actual reality you don't even see their pathetic messages.

it's good to think outside the box.

Good alternative to responding maturely to the messages. ;) In fact, it is a good help, such a 'rule'. :) (Folder Rule, no Forum Rule)
