Re: why is paki racist??

It's same as calling a Japanese a "jap" I guess (it seems to be racist to call them so, probably due to WW2 rivalry and slang from it used in a hostile way).
As for Pakistan case, I wonder if it's either from current Indian hostility or past British hostility towards Pakistan. (I don't know)

Agreed, its like me calling you English lawless one, would that offend you if i generalised and called you English or a Scot just because you come from the same sort of area in the world as me, Even tho your not English or Scottish?

i agree i could see this as a reason why alone with past troubles and current troubles in that area now it makes sense

But thats just what it is used for, its used to generalise people who are the same colour, i'd say it would insult someone from india being called a paki because india and pakistan have a bit of a violent history towards each other, but if you called someone from pakistan a paki i would say it wouldn't have the same reaction and they would be fine about it.

Re: why is paki racist??

pollock is also considered racist against Polish people...

even though the two you cited for Polish people were not...

the only truly slang term that I noticed in your list was Paddy for Irish...

Pol is more of an abbreviation of Pole... which I believe to be one of the correct term.

Pakistani is the correct term for someone born or living in Pakistan...

if you are offended by Paddy, feel free to argue against it...

I'm half Irish living in the USA,
and I've never been much familiar with the background of the word paddy,

but after reading Wikipedia,

and seeing the connection with the word paddywagon,

for a police vehicle,

especially one used to transport prisoners,

(my own prior belief... one doesn't need a wagon to go on a simple, unassuming patrol)

Paddy

Look up paddy in Wiktionary, the free dictionary.

Paddy may refer to:

* Paddy, a masculine given name, and a common diminutive for Patrick or Pádraig
* Paddy, in British English, slang (often derogatory) for an Irishman
* Plastic Paddy, a superficial claim to Irish heritage
* Paddy field, a field for semi-aquatic crops
* Paddy (pigeon), an Irish carrier pigeon during World War II
* Paddy Whiskey, a brand of Irish whiskey

-----^^^ makes me think they are silly for using that name...

* Paddy, slang word for a tantrum or fit
* Paddywagon, slang term for a police vehicle

I think it is...

although I do know that St. Patrick's Day in the USA is much different than in Ireland.

but like paki... paddy came to mean other things...

especially when you use it to mean something like a police transport. :P

I have to say that i call the big police vans that they use on a fri/sat night to cart away all the disruptive drunkards a paddywagon, I have a few irish friends too and thay call it the same thing, even the police do, and i haven't met an irish person who has ever taken offense to it being called that. ~T~

I've used the term myself... in the same spirit as you...

It's only been here that I learned that an Irish person was sometimes called a Paddy... and only tonight that I made the connection...

of course, I live on the other side of the pond,

and there is certainly the possibility that Wikipedia's writer(s) exaggerated the implications of the term...

either way, Paddy is the only other true slang term,
(as far as I'm aware),

in the list presented by the author, lawless one.

i dont see why its raciest at all.. You call a jewish a jew dont you? So why cant a pakistani be a paki..?

Not raciest.. only raciest if you call an indian, "a paki". because obviously they arent.. and might find it very offensive to be called that.. considering they arent.
