Re: thought and pre-crime...
Dumb, when I was 14 I got arrested in school for having an Ounce in seperate bags
I got charged the Felony of Possessing an illegal drug on school grounds with intent to sell, (thank god it was dropped to a violation as I was young)
Now if I read this, knowing that when I was younger I lived in Dallas, then Burlington then NYC now up here, anyways i'm semi sure those cities are the "geography" they are talking about
Now I'm 22 with a daughter, and I havne't smoked in 7 years my daughter is 3 that gives me 4 years clean on probi(didn't get clean my 1st year on felony probation) anyways...
What i'm saying is according to that paper, if I got arrested for say stealing or watever I'd be more likely to start smoking pot again? as it was a good "predictor" because I was arrested before
Thats a load of **Filtered**, and I personally think that a person is not deffined on who they were, but who they are!

a few months back (still ongoing though not reported by the media any more) we had the expenses scandal in the UK. for those that dont know, politicians were caught fiddling their expenses and claiming for the most stupid things, like toilet seats and hammers
anyways, they should use this tech because according to this tech, they will re-offend and we would save many millions of our tax pounds...as well as having a nice clear out of Parliament

That was one of the most ridiculous and plain dumb things I have ever read in my entire life. Whoever thought that up should be fired and made to work on a farm, feeding the ducks.

Re: thought and pre-crime...
unfortunately mate, its the same morons who gave us full body scanners, our leaders and the corporate world out to make a buck anyway they can.
sometime ago i linked (link long gone due to resent PC issue) to an article which told us all this was coming and it wasn't because "they" want to keep us safe but its an erosion of our freedoms and just goes to show that we are ALL considered guilty till proven innocent. it will get progressively worse. our freedoms are under attack, free speech is now considered a crime in many parts of the world and the internet is under serious attack....but hey, the world is still going round and the sun rises each morning so things are ok

Re: thought and pre-crime...
Lol they think they can predict da future.
this won't go anywhere..... cause you can't sentence for what might happen.
There is a legal term that sums up the reasons nicely but i can't remember it for the life of me.
Brvdas probably would know.

Re: thought and pre-crime...
well, common sense and logic tells you and the rest of us normal people exactly what you just said "you cant sentence for what might happen", do you think that will stop them going ahead with this?

Re: thought and pre-crime...
yes because there is a legal precedent for this. But i can't remember it right now.
Repeat offenders are a different story. Because you are extending sentences based on the persons inability to function properly within soceity.
But extending sentences based on hypotheticals has already been put down. ( why can't i remember the name!!!!)

Re: thought and pre-crime...
Forgive me if i wrong but i read 'Software Predicts Criminal Behaviour'
Not "Software Predicts Future"
You cannot predict the future, however, you can have more accurate guesses.
I.E Some people have a higher tendency to commit certain crimes due to the 'behaviour' and social backgrounding.
You can't sentence for what might happen. Ergo, this technology should be used to place preventive measures and safety nets if something does occur.

Re: thought and pre-crime...
i'm siding with Thriller on this one as a i am sure there is a legal precedent. the only difference between what Thriller said and what i am saying is that if they want this tech, they will find away around any legal obstacles.
but using this tech even for predicting behaviour amongst known repeat offenders is the presumption of guilt and puts the burden of proof on all of us instead of the system. thats a massive 180 degree U-turn in the legal system which will have ramifications far beyond predicting future behaviour in just criminals. in short, it sets a dangerous precedent, does it not?

Re: thought and pre-crime...
If i'm reading this correctly, i can't see how this is different from considering prior convictions when giving sentence. After all, that's just what that software takes into account. As said in the article, it just gives a technical advice to what is now a judgement call. I think it's a legitimate tool, if proved effective.
And it isn't about punishment, it's about the terms of probation. My stance, is that it's better to in-convenient 100 convicted fellonw slightly more, than to have 1 more innocent murdered.
Oh, and
You just gotta love that **Filtered** filter

Thanks to capitalism, when your doctor tells you you require a kidney transplant to survive, you no longer can be certain if you actually need a kidney transplant or your doctor simply needs a new speedboat. Nice.

Re: thought and pre-crime...
There is a good reason 'juvenile' criminal records are sealed in the UK, like Roket said we often makes silly mistakes in youth that are never repeated in adulthood.
I personally was arrested for possession of class A ( Acid ), class C ( Weed ) and section 47 Assault ( ABH on Police ) when I was 15, since then the only thing Ive done wrong was speeding 50mph on a 40mph road.
BUT
If my juvenile record was not sealed, or I had to declare it on job applications I probably would not have been able to get a job when I left school and maybe that would have caused me to become a career criminal.
Cause and effect of labeling people means you could make them become what you fear they will be.
