Your academic location reccomendation (UK noobs preferably)

Okay, now the rabble have been driven out by such a cunfusing title which i have no idea what it means, lets get down to business.

I am currently undertaking research as to where I should study my University course.

The course I am leaning towards is a Bsc or Masters in Mathematics.
However good it is to know which course I will be selecting, the wherabouts of such a course remains unclear. The college i study at gives some reccommendations, but that can only be given from the same viewpoints that I see from basic information available in prospectus' and other handbooks.

So my question to you joe public: Is there any place you would reccomend.
I would also like a couple of reasons, such as living costs, night life, quality of facilities, and of course teaching standards if your course has been relevant to my own choice.

Though I would prefer to remain in England/UK, those from other countries may reccomend their own countries, if it would be financially possible (e.g grants, bursaries, extremely cheap living)

Thank you for any time/advice you could put in to a reply.

Chris

@Kit-Fox. I was looking at the red bricks already. The only former poly i would have considered would have been my hometown, which doesnt offer the course i would choose anyway. Thanks for the general advice on choosing studies over social life, as currently, social life is taking preference in my mind

@Jim. Thanks, i hadnt previously looked at warwick. I have family in coventry, so i will give it a look

Re: Your academic location reccomendation (UK noobs preferab

stay near home and you will save money

be realistic and choose a wise place to do your degree.. DO NOT choose a crap school, choose a school where you can make contacts and chose a reputable school.. so even if you have to move out of the country, atleast people still recognize your degree..

Im in Canada.. but if you are in UK, then OXFORD AND CAMBRIDGE and university of Edinburgh are the only UK universities that ive heard off.. what im trying to say, if you come to canada for a job, those are the universities that will matter a lot, so try to get in them? :)

be realistic in terms of what you choose to study. do it to make money in the future, not to 'have a good time at undergrad'. its four valuable years.... ie. dont do math if you don't know what kind of jobs you can do as a mathematician..

I agree with kidfox for once, DO NOT consider the nightlife or social life when considering a university.. its a place to study not a party house

and most important advice, follow this closely.. "whatever you choose to persue, make sure you finish it and DO NOT EVER give up half way.. its the biggest waste of time and you will have gotten nowhere"
I cannot stress this enough..
Whatever you choose to get a degree in, Im sure you will make enough money to survive.. so make sure you finish the dammed degree..
if you give up= you wasted 3 years + your money + ur back to the start..

Finally, its importent to get INTO a university, Worry about the courses later.. and dont mass your self with 10 math course every year.. take some 'bird' courses.. but once again, this is all to consider after you get in!@

and your welcome..

btw whats redbrick?

I would totally go against Knowledge's idea that you should stay close to home to avoid costs.

At the moment, before the increase in is as much about enjoyment as it is about studying. Move away from home....for most this will be your first chance and its important you take it. Otherwise you wont develop as much as a person; which is just as important as the degree. Its going to be different now, but you still need to have a good time there or you will go totally mental with work.

How sure are you about doing maths? If your not sure, take a gap year to work etc. I wasnt sure I wanted to do history, so I took a gap year and by the end of it I knew thats what I wanted. Gap years also look good when applying to uni.

Re: Your academic location reccomendation (UK noobs preferab

Idk.. staying at home has helped me to great things.. I stay home and still go out with friends.. and even If I stay at home, its only like 30 minutes away so like I come home pretty late..

there are the goods and the bads for both side

staying home
good: save $, family, friends
bad: travel time, less new friends,

living on rez,
good: friends, close to school
bad: more exposure to drugs :O

the choise is yours..

btw i agree on taking a gap year, its only gonna waste one year in your long life
jim wernt you regreting taking history a while back or something? I remember reading that somewhere

Re: Your academic location reccomendation (UK noobs preferab

well, i study at Edinburgh University, and thoroughly enjoy it, taken a few maths courses over the past couple of years, which were well taught and quite interesting, so i would recommend it

in terms of nightlife, yes, it is important, university is not just a place to study, it's a place to socialise, meet new people, get drunk, stay up till 6am and sleep in till 4pm...all of these things are part and parcel of being a student

regarding where to go, you might want to consider the type of university you prefer and even the type of town

in terms of university type - Warwick for example is a campus university (according to family members who went there), so your choice of accomodation and accesability to night-life and other entertainment is slightly limited (Coventry being the nearest town/city)

Edinburgh University is (as is the case of most old/red brick unis) a city based university (with buildings dotted around the city in 2 main areas), as you live in the city you have good access to nightlife, entertainment etc

in terms of accomodation, first year, pretty much by necessity, will involve you staying in halls of residence (i recommend self-catered as your gonna have to learn to cook sooner or later & catered food is served at set times and is i'm told pretty revolting/repetitive)

as for a gap year (worry not, rant almost over) they are only worth doing if you actually DO something in them, work abroad for charity or something, otherwise (if you just mess around for a year) they don't take kindly to that

Re: Your academic location reccomendation (UK noobs preferab

Must say firstly, thanks for all further responses.

@Jim, Maths is definately going to be my university of choice. Spent a day in London, and the finance sector is where i want to be, but, if i change my mind at some point, the maths degreee would allow me more flexibility than a directed finance/accouting etc degree.

@Londo, thanks for bringing Edinburgh up in detail for me, Above the border is one place i haven't looked at in detail just yet. Also, for Warwick, as i previously said, I have family in Coventry and my mother is from there, so would perhaps be interesting to drop in down there.

As for anyone mentioning a gap year, At the moment that isn't on the agenda for me, If my results do not satisfy my university choices come the end of A level, I may reassess(sp) and possibly change that. Currently I intend to approach some businesses to see if i can volunteer within them during holidays to gain some vital experience.

my recommendation would be to find a place, where written English isn't a prerequisite :-D
