Re: Some interesting facts about (S)GW.

lol, how many people in GW you figure actually use alexa then ? ^_^

I'm betting these figures are somewhat 'overrated'

Did some checking on the Alexa thing, and it can be manipulated by scripts running in the users browser :D

Re: Some interesting facts about (S)GW.

Hehe. I have some estimates, but for now they're quite premature.

Yeah... But the question is who's going to set up scripts in their browser just to mess up GW's alexa ranking? :smt047
Yes, I do agree with you that the figures seem overrated.

Well, not specifically GW, but people who sell domain names, might crank up statistics to make domain names look more appealing then they realy are :P

Now I am curious though, whom in GW uses Alexa ??
Seeing as Alexa says visitors visit an average of 13 pages ...

Haha, I think all the battle reports count as a single page, as does spy logs and attack ranks pages etc.

Still, got me wondering ... seems like Alexa works in a system similair to which dutch television estimated their viewer rates in the past.
Off all the dutch viewers they had ~5000 devices amoungst them which gave feedback about what they were watching. All viewer rates were based on that.
Well, seeing as we had well over 15 million people in the netherlands at the time, its kinda odd to have 5000 represent them all.

Re: Some interesting facts about (S)GW.

However, those devices are randomly distributed (Assumption; correct me if I'm wrong)
But Alexa toolbars are purely "opt-in". So I wouldn't say they are an accurate representation, of global internet users. The people that are likely to know about Alexa, and those that actually use Alexa, are, say, a lot more likely to be going to a blog about SEO than a blog about sewing.

And isn't that what newspapers and stuff do as well? Ring up a small group of randomly selected people and get their opinion on certain things? Flawed, yes, but it seems to work (More or less)

Sites Linking In 9

That needs to be like 50-100 for a game to grow properly

If Admin J has proper server Equipment to handle Large amounts of players on his server all at once he should try invest in maby 200-300 different Advertisements linking in lol.... and he would have a good 500% more people playing (90k accounts *5) in the 1st month....

Re: Some interesting facts about (S)GW.

:smt081 That quite depends on the USP's of this game.. and frankly, it's less flashy, takes more time and gives less 'braggable' rewards than some crappy Facebook game (CityVille, anyone? *puke*) does.
This game is for people with big imaginations. ;) Not the general audience of such brainless point-and-click games like (again) Facebook games. No strategy, just click. BAH. Glad we have GW. :P

Pffft The Face Book. More like the compelled-by-peer-pressure-to-opt-in, gain-as-much-personally-identifiable-information-about-your-users corporation. [-X

And, flashy, like blowing up tanks? :smt115 :-$

But yeah...

Yes, they got randomly distributed, but only to certain households which met certain criteria.
And your right though, as much as they are statistics, they're just indications.

The thing Golden brings up is quite interresting, only 9 sites linking in.
ATM a lot of players are going through the suggestions threads for game improvements ... but euhm .. perhaps we could ask admin to give us a little insight into his advertising campaing and see what he does, perhaps we could be of far more assitence there then thinking up game improvements.

The server side should be fine, the connections are able to handle several 100 people massing at the same time ... so enough resources available there.

9 sites which have been indexed. However, a lot of forums don't allow advertising (this one included). There are three problems I can see with this game getting members.
One being getting the message out there in the first place.
Two being the fact that a lot of members came here in the first place purely because it was stargate-oriented.
Three being the fact that the front page looks corny beyond belief, and compared to other clicky web-based games, looks like it's from a decade back trying to look a decade ahead.

nmbr 3 hurt my chest ... I fell off the couch and continued rofling

With a decent campaing and insight where what is promoted, one could come a long way.
If in fact, that within a lot of known gaming index pages/lists, GW isnt known, well, that will simply NOT get you members.

I've got a high degree in web development and everything pertaining it, and your 1 and 3 points are one of the most crucial things concerning sites.

Number 1. (simple realy) Advertising campaing, no ads, no new people looking for a new game.

Number 3 comes after the initial new visitor came by. No matter how corny some games are if the visual representation has something appealing, you will look further into it. You will even remember that visual representation when thinking of the name of the game. So in fact, an appealing first impression look is very important.

And dont forget, text based games run very smooth on cell phone decives and what not, in contrary to a lot of flashy games :)

Haha, though this game still runs on more mobile devices then a lot of flash games.

Mobile devices generally have a delay in their connections , which can easily result in incorrect processed information. (speed generally being around 7 mbit and hops over cell towers etc)

Re: Some interesting facts about (S)GW.

Actually when i wrote that i was in the Process of sending admin an e-mail of a Advertising plan which could get us allot of members quite quickly :)

so it should pick up and go from 9 sites linking in to about 50-500 hopefully depending on how much jason is prepared to spend making his game better.

But i do agree the Front page needs to look less dull and more creative :)

1 issue i see there is there aren't many Descent Open source images that can be used :/
