Just started watching this, seen episodes 1-3 so far and really liking it. Great cast lead by Jeremy Irons set in Rome 1492 around the Church and politics of the time. Lots of powerplays and plots, bit of sex and violence thrown in, great script and screenplay.

Yeah I think it's finishing airing and already a 2nd series being scheduled for next year, I only just noticed it and catching up. Your right about Jeremy Irons, as well as being a great actor he is very picky about the shows/films he does, his name pretty much guarantee's quality.
I discovered there was BBC production by the same name in 1981 so Im trying to get that too.
