Re: Hard drive question
I don't get any blue screens.
My machine just restarts and sometimes gets a disk read error. That only ever seems to go away if I touch the cable connected to the hard drive.

this is just a novice talking...
who was solving puzzles at 6 months, but knows how to break things better than how to repair them...
I do, however, have a habit of walking in, and understanding things just in time to solve / fix them... including my friend's car, but I don't drive.
what if your SATA cable is...
a) shorting out, but only some of the time,
b) overheating, but only some of the time,
c) otherwise hates the owner with a passion?

This is typically the source of all my problems, imo.

But I do agree that the cable could be bad. I would always replace the cable before the HDD, simply because it's the cheaper option.

And guys I think the cable has been replaced once alreadySure that was mentioned in earlier posts
I thought I remembered reading that here, which is why I didn't mention it at first (edited my post so it would still seem on-topic
).So far I think you've got all this advice business handled, Kit-Fox.

No. I would expect more. MORE, DAMN YOU!
I mean...
Not at all. Good luck with that. At least it's one industry that is still growing.

Re: Hard drive question
clark ill just ask u did u read what i suggested ya....
i had same issue weeks ago and im sure for 90% its what happening at yr pc. most prob yr power supply needs replacing if its an old pc +5 years , its parts are going down, u can fix it but u need some basics in electronics just to find the parts that need replacing or replace it fully.
if u think its the hdd generating bad blocks then it ll freeze few times and then it ll dmg system files and u wont be able to boot windows , but since its going on for some time then i dont think its hdd the source of the issue. u can temp fix by runing chkdsk with fix and repair switch and reboot, it llremove bad blocks.
memory err usually dont freeze yr pc they jsut make it restart , same for temp.

Re: Hard drive question
It's not 5+ years, I got it last year, a bit over a year ago.
But, everytime I take the SATA cable out I remove the power cord before doing it, so when it happens again maybe i'll just try taking the power cord out and back in again see what happens then.
Maybe i'll try and find a power supply tester.

Re: Hard drive question
I can't. I have a Shuttle PC and therefore only have space for 1 internal hard drive and 1 optical drive.
