Upon much consideration, I hereby announce my personal opinion as to the type of players in game that shape the game we play (excluding forum-based nonsense).
1) The Politicians
The politicians are essentially the leaders and major figures in the game. They are the players who build alliances and empires, making friends with those they like and starting wars with those they dislike. It should be noted that the many politicians also possess powerful accounts themselves in game as a great leader is one who leads by example. EtL, Robe, Jedi~Tank are all great examples of political leaders.
2) The Power-Players
This is that small number of players that have the very best accounts in the game. Many have been built by hard work, some acquired through other means. One thing is for sure, you want them on your side, not as your enemies. Key players in this category typically change rapidly as accounts change hands, but notable examples have included Bullseye, Rodwolf and Field Marshall.
3) The Under-Fighters
There are a number of players which do not fall into the above categories, but still make their name on the battlefield. They do not have the best accounts in the game, merely average or just above, and yet time and again they battle against those with bigger and better accounts, often successfully. These are the real under-fighters, those who can punch well above their weight. Never letting a challenge go unanswered they will always defend themselves and their friends. Notable names that fall in this category include Buck and Mathlord.
4) The Tradesmen
These are the men and women who quietly keep the game moving. They play the markets, always looking for profit; rarely fighting but always providing the services to keep the wars going on. Hippyfool was perhaps the most famous example of the tradesmen.
5) The Stat-lovers
Ever see someone with insanely high stats but who rarely puts them to use in the battlefield. Less common these days, but there are still some of them around i'm sure.
6) The Everyman
90% of the players in the game fall this category. They slowly go about their business, building their accounts and partaking in their alliances to some degree. They farm and raid occasionally, massing only when really required or pushed. They remain in obscurity happily, blending in with the rest; loyally obeying the orders of the politicians and in awe of the power players and under fighters.
7) The Idlers
PPT is their friend. They really do nothing else. Their accounts are essentially farms.
Which category do you fit into? Are there any categories i've missed?

Re: The types of gatewars players
At great risk of ridicule I would put myself in the category of the under-fighters.
Whilst never having the greatest account due to financial stingyness I've spent the first half of my playing time as the underdog in wolf359, NEO, Reborn and EPA.
On a side note, I think this guide is quite accurate to the different groups of players

Similarly, I believe that people in general are inherently flawed. Deep down, we are programmed to hurt one another; either physically or emotionally. People are naturally selfish and greedy; governed more by bestial urges than common sense or ethics. Society is a terrible thing, too. The more supposedly civilized we become, the more immorality and decadence become the main staple of our daily diet.

forgot farmers and raiders...
forum spammers,
ascenders, stat-builders...
also lesser politicos...
I farm a lot... rarely enough to buy turns with $$...
but often enough to use a lot of them,
and to acquire them as gifts or buy them with resources...
I typically spend a bare minimum of 2 - 3 hours every day or two
farming on at least one server.

I like dubby's lesser politician idea..
kinda reminds me of me.
If anything, I'd put myself as the everyman, sadly. I've fought as an underdog, but dunno if I ever really went "above my weight".. Not that skilled, lol.

I would say a mix between under-fighter and every man depending on the situation, I also used to be minor politician few years ago.

You forgot a category that would house the scammers and scum-a-like. I'd name those that would fit in there but they know deep down who they all are.

Re: The types of gatewars players
I was mostly focusing on the players that make the most impact and thus shape the way the game develops.
Players that exclusively farm but don't really fight would definitely be in the everyman category. If they farm to build powerful accounts they can be power-players, or if they fight they might be under-fighters. These are not perfect definitions and players can belong in between several categories. But a farming category is not needed imo.
Typically speaking raiders are also tradesmen, they raid and sell the UU.
Forum spammers cannot be a category of ingame playing style, as it is not in game at all.
Ascenders are generally newer players who have not been around long enough to determine which group they fall into. Once they finish their ascensions, they will fall into another category. A newbie category probably should have been included however to cover these players.
Stat builders I included in a category of their own.
Lesser politicians is an interesting theory. Care to elaborate on what their roles and impact is in game?
I'd put them in the Idlers category in game.
Good point, I did forget them, but i'm not sure they deserve a category though. Maybe its better just not to give them the satisfaction of being mentioned.

psssh! grizz, everyone know's you're a stat lover so don't even pretend
i think i could successfully argue that i'm a mixture of all of these categories (or have been at one point or another) though somewhere between under-fighter and everyman right at this moment. I'm always a minor politician too though.

Re: The types of gatewars players
You need a nooblet category - for those who are new, sometimes excelling and sometimes making a name for themselves...often for the wrong reason, and often leaving very quickly after their brief appearance - n00bs whose names escape me for reasons of their noobiness
There's also a splinter group out of the politicians - the diplomats. Different to your ETLs, Robes, JTs, they often do not have the account or the clout to back them up. But they usually get their way, sometimes through nefarious means, other times through sheer cuddliness - SS, Semper, Badwolf
I'd make the forum fighter a category too - and I'd probably put myself there. Yes, occasionally I've made an impact ingame, but more often than not I get an undue praise because I can convince people I'm more active and more relevant than I actually am (a case in point the TO vs FUALL war) - it definitely does have an impact on the game, and the ability to create an image is just as important here as it is in RL
