National Holidays as Global Announcements

Given the controversy caused by Jack's making an American national holiday a global announcement, and then strictly modding said thread, let's discuss the actual ridiculousness of making said thread global in the first place:

Zeratul wrote:One final thing to you all about threads about (inter/intra)national holidays and similar getting global. There is nothing that says only american ones can get it. If there's more than a couple that care about something on the forums in a holiday and there's nothing that does not fit with the forums in it, then other holidays may get global. However it will not happen too often as then it would loose meaning. The reason so far that it has mainly been american ones like thanksgiving is simple. They're the only ones that have cared enough to try to get it up.
We ourselves celebrate the norwegian constitution day heavily, yet we do not try to make global announcement of it since there arent exactly many Norwegians here.

However, it might not be a good idea to have religious holidays up here, as that might offend the more sensitive people from other religions. We'd rather avoid that mess if we can.

Now with the greatest of respect, the thread received three replies wishing a happy thanksgiving, ergo not appealing to a large section of the player base. I have/had no problem with Roket celebrating said holiday in the appropriate section, my problem is with an American mod taking (what I can only assume is unilateral) action to globalise said announcement.

This isn't a lets bash mods thread, nor a lets bash Americans thread, but it is a question as to how and why this happened? And is this going to become standard practice?

imo Global announcements should be reserved for matters effecting users ingame or on forum..

I agree femme - and I personally think NO national holidays should ever be made a global announcement, but that's just me. Hence the thread to see what others think.

I agree. Same goes for religious, cultural, oddball and other holidays, and New Year. (After all, our new year is not the Chinese new year, nor the Jewish, nor the Babylonian.)

Doesn't political correctness suck? Yes, it does.

Re: National Holidays as Global Announcements

I think only holidays concerning majority of playerbase should be put as global announcement as I said already: that means Christmas and New Year. Given majority of playerbase is from North America/Geographical Europe/South Africa/Commonwealth nations, and thus only two (well maybe three if we count Easter) holidays involve majority of player base.
Otherwise, if a US holiday is put on global announcement that means specific holidays should too for UK, Australia, Canada, Ireland, Netherlands, South Africa, Slovenia...
Especially Canada considering Jason is Canadian.

I think no one should care, because it doesn't matter.

And yet, two people posted in said holiday thread, two different people PMed me agreeing, and multiple people have voiced an opinion here. Seems like other people think it does matter.

And no thanks, I've been asked to be a mod many times in the past, but there are too many trolls like me lurking to ambush the unwary traveller ;)

Why doesn't it matter? -and why should no one care?- :-k

Issue matters, because I am much in doubt that same would be done (global announcement) for other nations' national holidays if they were to be posted. Would appear to be favoritism. :-"

But now the precedent has been set that it is okay....so tomorrow is the:

Ascension of Abdul-Baha - can we have a global announcement for that?

And the independence day for: Albania, Mauritania, Palau - how about them?

All flippantry/pedantry aside: I'm merely asking where the boards/community stands on this. If you're saying all we need do is ask and we shall receive then you're opening a can of worms....

Re: National Holidays as Global Announcements

Well why should it matter? It just seems to me like it's unimportant. You don't celebrate Thanksgiving? Ignore the topic. You want another holiday topic global'd? Ask. It just so happens that Jack is American and so celebrates Thanksgiving, and can Global a topic.

Mods are not going to make a little calendar and mark down holidays to create Global topics for, whatever happens happens. I don't think it's reasonable to say no topics about holidays can be Global'd.

*EDIT*
and no asking does not mean you will get a topic, there will not be one for "Ascension of Abdul-Baha"

Re: National Holidays as Global Announcements

I did neither say none, nor complex calendar of yes/no. Simple. Christmas and New Year are the two community-widespread holidays, make them the two globalizable. Maybe include Easter too, that would make three. It would be clear and would on the one hand avoid people flows from asking about this or that to be globalized and end with too commonly used feature, on the other hand it would also avoid issues of "arbitrary choices" and criticism resulting from it (these posts/threads about that).

I'm not advocating that, I'm talking about national holidays

Shall we celebrate Columbus Day? Yay, lets celebrate the beginnings of one of the worst genocides in human history! - see the problem? Any national holiday is potentially inflammatory ;)

EDIT: again, I'm not saying lets not have any threads about these things, just why the hell they need to be globalised is beyond me?!

Re: National Holidays as Global Announcements

and I'm saying, it's too much to ask that we come up with some compendium about holiday topics. No national holidays is the start but where does it end? It's something that is so unimportant, the best way to address the issue is to let happen what will happen.

Thanksgiving got a global announcement. That doesn't mean any other national holiday will, and it doesn't mean any other national holiday won't. It also doesn't mean any other global holiday will or won't, like christmas or new years. Whatever happens happens. It's just not an important enough issue to make rules about what can or can't have a global announcement.

In my opinion.
