The most important questions for picking phone is really "what do you intend to use the phone for? What do you think you will actually need?"

Is the goal (beyond basic features like calling and messages) to have:
a small, portable computer?
a media player?
a good-quality camera?
or is the goal to have something that has little beyond the core features present in pretty much all phones?

Those choices greatly affect the phone choice...

When we last had to change phone, we went for the last, and we don't regret it one bit... We had a temporary phone that fit the first category, but having to charge it several times a day wasn't worth it. It is a nice phone we chose. We can store it in a bottle of water. And we only have to charge it a little under once a week.

Also, to avoid dropping it we've attached a hooked 40cm chord to it. Easily detachable. said chord also makes answering it far easier, as we only have to pull the chord to get the phone. Even when detached it is very hard to misplace the phone, considering that with chord extended, it is a bit over 0.5m long.

Alright, let's clear some of this up a bit. I was hoping to avoid naming the phones for the purpose of avoiding the "OMG HTC!! GET EEEET!" comments (or vice versa). But I am pleasantly surprised by you guys.

So.
Phone 1 (the left) Is the Samsung Stratosphere
Phone 2 (the right) is the HTC Droid Incredible 2

The primary use of my current phone is sitting in my pocket. I lead an exciting life. My current phone is a Samsung Saga. It's from 2008 and is, what I call, a dumb smart phone.

What I am looking for is a phone where I will have the ability to do things like check email and be able to reply immediately, text, use apps like Maps and the internet to find places, information, and check websites I frequent while bored and separated from my laptop, text, and use it as a normal phone. It would also be nice to have a phone where I could store things like excel documents and be able to pull them up, but I don't know if that is possible on either of these, so that would simply be an added bonus. I like to take photos, and I don't always have my advanced digital camera, so I would like to have a camera that works well and can be used on a regular basis (I'm tired of my current phone telling me it can't even pull up the camera photos because of memory issues when there are less than a dozen stored in my phone).

I've not had a phone that stores music before, so I do not know if I would use that feature or stick to my ancient iPod. I like the global readiness of the HTC because I do plan on traveling extensively once I get a steady income. I want a phone that is lightweight but durable enough to last several years. I live in an area with 4G, but that wouldn't mean much when I travel away from said area. Price does play a part in the decision, but I don't want it to drive me to get a phone I consider to be good, but maybe more than I am looking for. However, if the Samsung is better than the HTC, I'd rather spend less money on a superior phone than more money on an inferior phone (if that makes any sense).

It would appear the only phone-pushers (pushing specific phones) are the "idiots", of which there appears to be few here.

That use description certainly clears up a lot on what you need, and makes us realize that we cannot offer any truly meaningful help, as we know very little about "smart" phones.

Only problem with it is that it allows texting, if were are able to disable this function it would be the best phone ever.

I'm in a similar situation to Psyko as my current contract has run out and I'm looking mainly at HTC phones simply because friends and brothers have advised me to look in that direction. However I've heard the battery life on HTC's aren't great.

you'll have to charge it at least once every 2 days, but i usually plonk it on the charger every night before i go to bed.

The Samsung does beat the HTC in battery life, but it's not that difficult to charge a phone (especially if I have a USB charger).

So much to think about.

Pros :its simple, its the most reliable out of all the smartphones, its efficient, it does everything you need and more,

Cons : expensive, it has become too common, has lost its exclusivity appeal, some people dont like apple

battery life is expected to be poor considering what functions and all the apps and large screen all consuming power.

I can get an iPhone 4 (not the 4s) for $99.99.

I have no aversion to Apple products. My current laptop is a MacBook Pro and I use a classic iPod for my music player.

What I specifically dislike about the iPhone is the inability to have the screen move sideways to make the keyboard bigger, the fact that it seems like if you want the phone to do anything you have to purchase an app (there's an app for that), the issues it has had in the past regarding signal (I have a basement apartment, so that makes me dubious), and the fact that it is so exclusive and expensive if I wanted to purchase anything from a new charger to an accessory compared to other phones on the market.
