They claim to be "land of the free" and all that and a bastion of democracy, yet there is never any real chance for any political party beyond one of two winning the elections. Chuckleworthy.

It's about the money. Members from other parties do not have anywhere near the financial pull as the Republican and Democratic candidates. Some from the Independent Party have won Congressional seats, primarily because they were able to get enough funds to compete on the state level; they are rarely able to get the financial support necessary for a long national campaign.

You also have the fact that on election years where the President is running for re-election, like this year, there are Republican debates constantly which only show the world the Republican candidates. If a viable third-party candidate existed, they would only be allowed into such debates after the Republican nominees are chosen. Which then makes it impossible for them to win because the country has had over 9 months to become familiar with the Republican and Democratic Nominees' platform. The laymen voter isn't going to pay any attention to getting to know a third-party candidate after being hounded by ads for 3/4 of a year. Their decision has already been made by that point.

the American election system has not really changed much since the country was founded. it might have teched up a bit, but it is still based around systems designed for when communication from one end to the other took days or weeks rather than seconds.

Those two parties are too powerful. Any real political shakeup cannot happen there, much like it is impossible in countries that are considered dictatorships. Voters cannot really choose anything besides those two alternatives and actually have any chance of affecting things.

Well, I suppose it's either stability (few big parties that have big weight voters-wise) or instability (bunch of medium/small parties who need to make a coalition to govern the country if they get elected, with risks of coalition breakup and instability).

True. However the parties have evolved throughout the course of history.

true. not always, but these past many many years, it has refined itself into a system that effectively only has two parties. A minor candidate here and there in lower echelons of government do not count.
