Filter list

for FORUM issues, complaints, requests, bugs, etc - - not game related...

Would you prefer if the wording of the Swearing rule were enforced as written?

Yes, having all words considered "profanity" filtered makes things clearer.

Is for people like jack.

Dovahkiin wrote:If it were upto me, there'd be no filter and no rules prohibiting 'profanity.' Better yet, no rules prohibiting 'profanity' but keep the filter, just enable the ability of users to disable the filter.

A small minority in my opinion, but putting it on the poll lets me know how big of a "minority", and if it really is a minority.

I agree with Jack/Dovahkiin. The filter should initially be on for new users, and if they feel they don't want the filter there, then it can be turned off.

deni wrote:We all know that Jason wants the forum family friendly. And family friendliness implies that no profanity is to be tolerated.

The forum is family-friendly for those that have the filter on/those that don't know to turn it off. AKA, those that "family-friendliness" is supposed to protect.

deni wrote:Now, there is a sometimes a fine line what's profane and what not and it usually depends on the context.

Context is easier to see with the actual word instead of " **filtered** ", right?

deni wrote:1. prevent the general public to see "bad" words
2. lessens the workload of the moderators as the posts do not have to be edited
3. lessens the warnings given out for swearing

1. the proper people in the general public will not see "bad" words
2. the mods will not have to edit posts- for those that want to swear, they can use the actual words (not that I'm advocating swearing, mind you) and not bypass the filter.
3. again, context will be easier to establish, lessening the warnings given out.

Everyone's happy. :smt058

Except that I haven't voted and am not going to. The option is ridiculous, designed to make those that choose it seem childish. Yet we're not the ones with an irrational fear of a few words that someone at some point in time arbitrarily decided to deem verboten.

I have made the case for filtering that, and other words, but most of the mod team, and I'm sure users would highly object to such a decision.

The written form of the rule that says no swearing says "no profanity" at all times.

b. Profanity
The use of all profanity on the SGW forums is prohibited at all times. This means swearing, cursing, and vulgarity. This includes the use of masking. Profanity in images (such as in signatures), videos linked (such as YouTube), or in articles linked is also prohibited.

Note:
Masking is using characters, HTML tags, or anything else to express a word that would otherwise be filtered; in other words, it's bypassing the filter. Profanity not a part of the main focus of the page being linked (such as advertisements or comments) will not be policed as they can change quickly and easily.

Consequence:
When only minor profanity is used, only a Verbal Warning may be issused. In all other cases a Board Warning will be issued. In the case of Masking a Board Warning will always be issued.

So, would you prefer we police the forum that strictly? or leave it to personal judgement?

I also said this in the same post/thread and stick to it

MEZZANINE wrote:Anyone who thinks that kids who are old enough to have internet access havent heard and seen things far worse than a swear word is deluded. Swearing and insults can be used in funny & expressive ways without being offensive, it's more about the context and intent than the words themselves.

Also in a later post in the same thread I tested the filter by typing all the swearwords I could think of, check it if you want to know what the current filter allows and what it blocks.

Filtering doesnt work, if I were to post.......

1) HolyS word - Im might be simply expressing shock yet the filter would block it.

2) Do bears **filtered** in the woods - That is simply a common humorous phrase

3) **filtered** off you **filtered** - That is clearly an intended vulgar insult regardless of the filter blocking words since people of any age on the internet will fill in the blanks in their mind.

Dont make the mistake of thinking I advocate swearing, but filters dont prevent insults, anyone with a vocabulary can word an insult or be offensive without swearing and if they do swear the meaning is still clear even when filtered.

Only high mod activity and careful discretion can warn for insults, and there is no perfect system or set of rules that can be applied, just mods doing their best and accepting they will never please all the people all the time.
