I think GS is referring to the time where everyone associated the others by their race.

For instance, he would be an 'arrogant Tollan' (they always are, so), I would be a 'distant Ancient' (they always are, unless they are Ori), things like that. Not we calling ourselves by such names, but we being called such by our peers / competition.
With the Facebookification of the internet, things like usernames and nicks lost their charm; or at least, fell in disuse. I prefer it when people call me Juliette, but even I - Queen of Many Personae - had to fall and allow my real name to become known. The OOCness hurts me.

Ya that's pretty much what I meant. True that now I can call myself Tollan, Tauri, or what ever I like to call myself, I can call my self The Canadian Elf even.

But being a Tollan back then, its almost like being a Rogue, Warrior or Wizard in the PC game Diablo, each class (or Race in this case) each one has their own specific traits.
It was also like working with a team to, cause if I remember in the attack area, there was a small chart that shows which is the dominate race that was determined how big our forces were and other stuff.
Not to mention, you know when you see an Asgard back then, you know their defense were 25% stronger than any other race, where as Tauri has 25% better attack, Replicator 25% Covert and Anti-Covert, Goa'uld is a well rounded race with an increase in naq production, and so on.
Looking it at that way, the game felt kind of bare in that department when it switch to fixed races to customizable races.
