I wasn't really speaking in your defense, but against the comment. It's played out as if it's an issue to be gay. Who says... "We can make something that is partially about gay people, and you can play the straight part" trying to be funny? 99.9% of the time, it's the other way around.
"Hey, let's be a gay and straight group. You can be straight." Where does that leave you?
Of course, it is entirely plausible that some stone-age principle was applied and that it was hoped that calling someone 'gay' would be considered an insult.. similar to calling a man a woman in an attempt to rouse his wrath..
