Honours and Awards
Again - suggested many times before and never implemented. Besides - this is like Technology - increasing your technology stast already gives you bonuses.

About about straight up reseachers. They randomly find some way to enhance a certain aspect. it cost naq per turn.
Every advancement causes a 1-3% increase in overall stat. One researcher in any field can get an advancement at a .000001% per/turn, cumulative. For example, one researcher working for 20 turns (10 hours) has a .00002% chance to discover something on turn 20. Then turn 21 has a .000021% chance. Once they make an advancement, it sets back to zero. It might not seem like that big of a deal, but pour enough money into research and you don't need to ascend. It can off set the aristocracy thats seems to have developed, since that requires being up there in rank to ascend.
There are six different kind of researchers:
-Anti/Covert: Obvious.
-Defense: Develop armor and shields, increases defensive bonuses for ships and ground units.
-Offensive: Develop Weapons, offensive bonus for ships, fleets and ground forces.
-Economic: Increases naq/turn
-Industrial: Increases UP
-Philospohical: Every advancement gives you 1-10 GR points, or an overall .5% increase to the whole empire
Any bonus in covert, offense, or defense, it only effects one sub area. Say you get an advancement in Offense, it will randomly effect the mothership offense, the fleet offense, or the ground offense. Or maybe you could choose when your spending money.
Every advance has a chance to be a major discovery. It increase by 5-10% instead of the little one.
Like I said this could be a way for little guys to fight.
