They are pretty much the same thing, except that lifers cannot be untrained.

i read that lifers i bought on the market

but i didn't buy any units on the market, but still have about 10% of lifers

Go to Training Center and train Miners/mining bots/ whatever else there are. A small percentage of them will automatically be made lifers.
