After all the planet thieves and possible multis stealing planets for the sole puprose of making naq or doing it for the hell of it, planets need to be harder to steal... morso then they allready are.
1. Having your mothership defend the planets when they are attacked. If your mothership is away "searching" for planets, then it can't defend them. Only if the fleets are able to break through the shields of the mothership should they be able to affect the planet, also the defending mothership should inflict damage to the fleets and the attacking mothership just like in regular battles.
2. A limit on how many times you can be attacked for planets per day. This would be able to stop planet massing unless it was a dead account in which you'd take a day or two to mass the defences. Could be 5-10 planet attacks on you per day.
Have at it. And only one of these options is needed but both could be implimented.

Seriously, some guy tried to planet mass me by attacking my planets again and again, cause each time the planet being attacked loses defenses. Luckily I was online and could steal his repair naq, and destroy his fleets, but he got in at least a dozen attacks before that happened. MS's should defend planets, because to repair plantary defenses costs like 500 mil or so per attack, whereas fleets only cost like 100 mil to repair. I was losing 14 defenses each attack, which cost 60 mil each to repair. So thats 840 mil naq per one attack! Luckily the naq I got off of him helped to pay for repairs.

we spend SO much naq on planets and they are huge investment. Planets should be very hard to take.

I agree with Saber. If you don't want to deal with planets, don't invest in them. You can still make a very good account without them.
Planets were designed so that they could be stollen easily enough. The more naq you put into the them, the more danger you put yourself into loosing it all. Lets not put more restrictions into the game...

planets are expensive to defend, because they are planets, and they are meant to be stolen, It is an ill placed investment, I myself once invested 10bil, naq in planetary defenses on a Good UP planet, Only to have it stolen a few days later. I never saw it again
But thats the way the game works, Planets are only temporary. If you loose a planet? Go steal somebody elses. Thats the point.
However,
It would seem logical that the universes mothership would defend the planet. So i can see where your argument is going.

I am for it as long as the MS attack doesn't hit the planet. I reason being is they have a head start. As in, planet defences haven't had a chance to catch up. So only fleets attack the planet, if the attacking MS defeats the defending MS.

There are only so many planets in the game. if it were alot harder to steal a planet then a select few players would have all the planets and the rest of us could never get them. planet thieves are a necessary evil, as they keep the planets moving from player to player. planets are also a great way for younger players to supplement their account. for awhile at least, until someone happens to notice it. case in point, planet stealing makes the planet system fair for everyone and makes the game alot more enjoyable.

Make more planets. That way more newbs will be able to have them. Besides, easier to defend = newbs keeping planets more of the time.
