Vampire Animes
Currently in search of some good vampire animes for some research on my currently in writing novel. As I can understand and speak Japanese with relative ease, I have no problem watching nonimported animes. I have seen and own Hellsing. Givith suggestions.

Karin was pretty good and funny, the vampires here a bit different the suck the blood acording to certain tastes/moods in victims, karin is the only one that infuses blood (cause she has too much-> must get rid of it or get really bad nosebleeds), she still has vicctim mood preferences.

who needs submarines anyway, those little black boats just keep sinking under the water anyway.

D is classic, see it.
Beyond that, there are a lot of "vampire" mangas and anime, but I assume you are going to be looking for something in a more traditional vein (pardon the pun) as opposed to, say, vampian kids or vampire doll.
I would suggest Vampire Princess Miyu. Good art style and another series that I would consider a classic (there are two series, the OAV and a TV series, I suggest the OAV).
Other vampire anime that are worth a look:
Nightwalker (a bit lighter than most of the others, but a fun series)
Lunar Legend Tsukihime (decent animation and a good story)
Lament of the Lamb (not a traditional vampire story, but fairly well done with good art)
Trinity Blood (this one is on late nights on cartoon network, so you can check it out for free if you've got cable, and is one of the better vampire series to come out in recent years)
There are a host of others, but they are either poorly done in general or use the vampire lore as a backdrop by twisting it (Karin, for example, has the main character as a vampire that literally spews forth blood as opposed to drinking it, while her family are more "normal" vampires). Hope that helps.

As I said, I own Hellsing.
I ended up watching Vampire Princess Miyu a while back and was left with something to be desired.
Trinity Blood caught my attention though, so I'm trying to get a hold of that in Japanese.
Vampire Hunter D never caught me, but then again, I wasn't expecting much from it, and only saw an ep or two, so maybe I'll go back. Nightwalker, Lunar Legon Tsukihime, Lament of the Lamb, Black Blood Brothers and Blood the last vampire I have seen some bits and pieces of and they didn't catch me, but I will give them a second look. It has been a good few months since I've seen those bits from any of them(Other than BTLV, which I caught on some random TV channel in Japan and watched some of it and thought it was total BS).
One thing that I'm looking for though is the definition of a master vampire. In vampire lore, there's a clear division between a master vampire and a servant vampire. According to lore, a master vampire lives on his own power, where as a servant requires a master to keep his/her(its?) heart beating. So far, I have yet to find a clear showing of that in any anime about vampires though.

Vampire lore is very dependant on who you listen to. But yes, much of western vampire lore, especially modern lore, does describe such a master/servant relationship. Some animes hint at it (Tsukuyomi Moon Phase, for example, uses this relationship as a major plot point, although the relationship itself isn't really explored, just a character's ability to "free" servant vampires).
I can't think of any animes that really hinge on that particular bit of lore. Several, like Helsing, hint at such relationships, but they are almost always treated more as a bit of insubstantial background that are subsumed by the larger story and action. And I can't think of ANY anime that actually state that the master quite literally keep their servants living, a la Hamilton's Anite Blake series (a good read if you like vampire novels, although I'd suggest only reading the first half dozen or so, Hamilton seems to change the series over from action/detective stories to bad romance novels after a while).
Good luck in your hunting.

Hellsing TV is "meh" While the new ova kicks the crap out of it.
One that wasn't suggest would be..
Gantz Though it doesn't revolve too much around vampires per say.
Blood+
Hitsuji no Uta
Legend of DUO
Master Mosquiton
真月譚 月姫
Night Walker -Mayonaka no Tantei-
Vampire Princess Miyu
Vampiyan Kids
Vampire Sensou
Some of those titles are pretty good. Some I've never seen, so it's a grab bag.
