The Smashing Pumpkins

I've heard quite a few of their songs only recently for the first time and I thinks it's quality stuff and I'd like to know more about them so share the wealth that is knowledge and post something about the Smashing Pumpkins, not just for me, but for everyone! (assuming you care).

Are there any particular era's that should be heard or is it all good? I understand they went on for 12 years between '88 and 2000...

Are there any particularly classic songs from these guys, renound as the centre peice of their existance?

Any information is good! :-D

(I am aware of Google's existance by the way - I just think this might be a more interesting topic than who is the best at spamming)

If you want albums.....then check out Mellon Collie and Infinite Sadness...
or you can check out their "Best Of..." or check out Rarities and B-Sides...

If you can somehow find some of their old videos....your in for a treat....theyre really good....
Corgan, who was the lead singer, has a new solo album...TheFutureEmbrace. Its decent...
Im a fan of Corgans voice and his lyrics....though I enjoy the older stuff better....

One thing about the pumpkins: the were quite prolific. Most of their lives, rarities and B sides are actually better than the songs on the albums! So go fishing on Shareza or talk to your buddy Travis! Smashing Pumpkins defined the nineties. A lot of peeps would consider the albums Gish and Siamese dream "grunge". Well, I dont really slap a label on it. I think its quality and you cannot define something like their music!

The Album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness will always be a classic.
It sold 30-40 million worldwide? Its probally the most beautiful piece of music you could ever own. Dunno the exact number it actually sold...
My second pick would be Pisces Iscariot. These were all songs that were left off of Siamese Dream due to space restraints.

The there is of course Adore. Many Pumpkins fans do not like this whole era. The keyboardist died of an overdose and Corgan kicked his drummer chaimerlin out of the band! Many see Adore as Corgans first solo. Its heavy on piano and electronic samples. Its far different from the Psychadelic guitars of the previous albums, but quality music none the less.

For reasons I cannot recall, D'arcy left the band soon after and two new member were added to record Machina/the machines of god.

It was a marriage of Adore and Pisces. Intended to be a "concept album" it was beautiful none the less. At this moment, the Pumpkins were losing many fans. If it wasnt the original four, it was not the pumpkins. Even I will admit, Machinas I and II sound nothing like the Pumpkins!

But when it comes down to it: They record MachinaII/the friends and enemies of modern music shortly after touring for MachinaI. The record label tells them it is utter **Filtered** and will not sell another release with the Machina name (machina didnt do so good). So the pumpkins split and load their whole album on napster for free..

The pumpkins broke in 2000 and played a fifteen hour long concert.
Billy formed a unnoteworthy band called Zwan I didnt care for. Currently he has release his solo The Future Embrace, it redeemed him from the cheese that was Zwan in my eyes.

Billy Corgan is actually trying to Re-unite the pumpkins believe it or not!!
Says he misses his old band, admits he is an arrogant ass and wants to get back to making the quality music he cant alone..
