My Protection Policies...
I drafted this posting in response to JediMaster's question.
I also drafted this as a response when a major alliance such as GA, CoP, DD tries to publicly defend their policies of we can hit you, we can hit your officers, but you can not hit us or our officers...
My Officer, Self, and Alliance Protection Policies:
1) I check my officer's attack and intel logs daily, in addition to my own.
2) If my officer had something to do with it, I am willing to negotiate considerably.
Otherwise, not so much.
3) My officer is responsible for making sure he/she is not acting like a farm of any sort.
4) My officer is responsible for making me aware of anything he/she expects me to respond to.
5) I don't swear at attackers, or call them mean names.
I may be angry, I may even be nasty as per what they have done, or what I will do to them, but I am also a diplomat, and I am good at it.
6) I actually do encourage my officers to take care of their own issues.
7) If my officer doesn't wish for me to intercede, I usually stay out of the way.
8 ) My planet names reflect My Officer, Self, and Alliance Protection Policies.
9) I do have a reputation to uphold. Very few attacks on my realm go completely unanswered.
First warning:
If my officer informs me of attacks or threats against them, or if I notice more than two naq hits, two sabbs, one raiding hit, or one planet stolen, by the same player or alliance, or by multiple related/cooperating players, in my officer's logs:
The attacker(s) get one initial warning.
Compensation is required for stealing planets, or taking more than a few thousand UU in a day of raiding, or doing more than 20 billion total damage per week, successful or not.
Peace for me and my officer is required in all cases.
As much information as possible is logged, and it is kept indefinitely, usually at least 1 month.
Massing my officer automatically skips the "first" warning, and takes us to the second warning...
If the attacker isn't willing to peace, or isn't willing to compensate/return large amounts of lost resources, or after 2-3 repeated hits, or is followed up later by a threat or an attack or two from someone I can credibly connect to the first attacker, we move to second warning...
A second warning is something to the effect of:
"What part of hands off my officer didn't you understand!"
and, as Teal'auc wrote: giving notice that any further agressive actions against my officer will be considered as hits against me and dealt with as such.
This stage also usually gets them anywhere from a stern warning to asking/demanding compensation, to an outright massing threat.
This is where I contact my trigger-happy friends, and find out what it will cost me to make this player or alliance go away, should I decide to go that route.
This is also where I inform the attacker(s) that their alliance commander and their personal commander are being made aware of the situation.
Planet stealing at this stage will also get the attacker(s) and their friends informed that the attacker(s) are staring into the face of war, and a long and dirty war at that.
If I'm big enough, I'll take the planet(s) back by force on the spot plus the possibility of involuntary compensation.
Substantial sabbing or raiding, or over 20 billion in damage in a couple of weeks, also raise the possibility of involuntary compensation.
If I sincerely believe the player is a n00b, or that my officer was accidently removed/not added to their peace list, I may well feel compassionate.
If the attacker(s) decide to send or respond with nasty notes to me or my officer, blantantly going back on their word, etc, then war, and thus massing will certainly be considered.
In short, peace, and compensation for excessive or unfair losses are my primary goals.

Wait, so i cant hit your officer three times?
btw, i probably never will.
I usually just hit once and then never again.
What if your officer has this amount of naq out?
8,270,259,178 Naquadah stolen
9,005,137,084 Naquadah stolen
9,088,018,005 Naquadah stolen
Three hits, all against the same guy, in the same week.
EDIT: whoops, missed the "My officer is responsible for making sure he/she is not acting like a farm of any sort."

Re: I am unfair?
I like jedis officers protection, and find it fair, if you had a reason for the massing and i think you had every right to do so, thats fair enough.
I look daily at my officers too, if i see your name 3 times over the week i send a polite message, most seem to declare peace, and dont get much trouble.
As a c/o i think its your duty to protect them, you will find they will stay loyal and i go for that above anything else.

Re: I am unfair?
And by all rights and means you`re allowed to mass a bloke and then ascend immediatly afterwards. So what was the big deal then?
SGWs community is its heart and like in any community there are some "curtesies" and etiquete that you see being enforced/introduced/desired (subconsciously?) among players of at least simmilar power. Might does give right but where might of one side isn`t absolute right must be defined. And we get Empires, NAPS, alliances and at the lowest level... code of "prefered/honorable/fair/whatever" conduct among induviduals. Yes, it states "stargatewars": wars not war as in war perpetuum. To have plural you must therefore have certain periods of relative peacetime. And this is wehere things like these come in.

Takeing responsibility?
I learnt the hard way, well actually, the pointlessly cowardly way
Jedimaster tells people hes going to mass them, Im sure his officers have "protected by etc etc etc" in there planet names, If your stupid enough to go for it, deal with the consequences.
It doesnt matter who you are or who you think you are, its dog eat dog, just just happens jedimaster is a very very hungry canibal of a dog.

Why would I assume responsibility for something I did not do heh?
Just pointing out what I believe is basically the same principle. General oppinion seems to be that what was done to you was unhonorable and cowardly. Call it the majoritys colective "state of mind", if you will. The same state of mind for instance said random mass generators are bad and the same seems to have driven JMX into the creation of this topic... to check if his modus operandi cotradicts with said state of mind.

Re: I am unfair?
When that happens to me its because I probably never knew you. And I just let them take the planet back without any problems. I'm not gonna repay some planet defences. Just proves how useless defences on planets are.
