Well if you want to get technically about it yes it may have started as slang but over time languages evolve and thus new words are created and new meanings of words. It all depends on the development of the society so in fact in modern times that word isn't just to refer to a female dog the english language as a hole has evolved to the point were that has become part of its definition. It is all under the same concept of how a lot of major european languages evolved from latin. Just because you don't see it doesn't mean it isn't changing.
