I didn't think it was much chop at first. I couldn't help but compare it to the Doctor... but now that it is about 5 episodes in (in Australia) I am starting to like it upon it's own merits. Hell scary too. Except for that Cyberwoman - yeehaa.
I want a Cyberwoman suit now! 
Don't spoil it if you get Doc Who in a later series than series 3. But I understand that Jack becomes an integral part of the Time Lord mythology. Indeed I accidently spoilered myself on the Who website and found out something very interesting about Captain Jack. He has made quite a few appearances in series one and two of The Doctor.
