Birthday threads are spam. It's funny to see so many actually game related threads and posts disappear in the spam section or public dump while birthday threads are allowed...
A valid point. You get dumped for responding to any other general thread with smilies, yet people in birthday threads are permitted to blather on to their heart's content. I swear that eighty percent of some people's contribution to the forum is through spamming every birthday thread.

a simple pm goes farther than a big birthday thread. I would rather see a welcome back thread than a spamed up kiss ass birthday thread

I disagree. Most people who post in the threads wouldn't even know if it is the individual's birthday unless they are close with the person.
