Why do people remain mods after they quit the game?

I'm a reformer and I believe that mods who no longer play the game actively lack a certain finesse that comes from up-to-date in-game interaction. I know this will offend people who fit this category, but there is no excuse for quitting a game while trying to hold onto power over its forums.

Play the game and read the forums, or just play the game. No if's, and's or but's.

 If you had nothing but game playing mods people would whine and moan about why mods should not be allowed to play the game. Then if you had the reverse, you'd have complaints like the above. A good mod does not have to play the game, but a good mod can play if they want. Whether or not a person plays the game will not impact whether or not they are good mod.

you would kill the one "good" part of the community left... at least, imo.

I concur.

Just a word of thanks for all those admins and mods that freely give of their own time to keep these forums in check.

Trust me, the only reason anyone stays a mod is masochism. I was a mod too once upon a time, so trust me--their a bunch of masochists!

Seriously, the mod forums are even decorated like a dungeon (it was Robes idea!).

I thinks the mods are mods because they enjoy the company of their coworkers, the work that they do, and the people they moderate.

Hmmm, mixture I'd say, some for power, some for love of the game. I even applied for a Mod position once ( for the later reason ) so guess I'm as nuts as the rest of them

I think you like the sense of 'power' and being a mod makes you feel important or different from the rest of the community.
