No, you can only install mods as a simple forum admin if you have installed a mod that allows you to install mods as a forum admin. ALL mods need files edited.

If I remember correctly adminJ has "founder" status as an admin, and I believe Bazsy does too, the other admins may not. When I was admin on Battle Corp I had founder status. Maybe that is what is required.

@Zeratul, for a Mod to be "installed" it needs to be done through the ACP. FTP access is mainly just for uploading the relevant files. But installation is not done through the FTP access.

Now you are arguing semantics.. and it is simply untrue. You can only install mods if you have an installer mod. Usually, you just use an 'install.php' that comes with one of them mods.

With vBulletin, some Mods literally only have an XML file.

I download the XML file. I login to the ACP. I upload the XML file, and the mod is installed. The only time I access the server is if files come with the mod.

Is vBulletin and phpBB that different to each other in the way Mods are installed?

Yes, where it concerns security with PHP a lot of opinions differ on the matter; it has to do with a certain style of approach used by programmers from the last 10 years.

Nice example, perhaps ever heard of Mambo and Yoomla ? two popular CMS systems, they both were once 1 team, but due to differing opinions on security, they split up and each went their separate way.

When it comes to third party programs being installed in an existing system, there is no such thing as trusting in what another has build.
If a third party application has a security problem (exploit) annoying things happen, like your host suddenly sending out a couple of 100 thousand mails over night in your name, spreading spam.

Most common practice to trim down possible negative effects of such exploits, is to disable commands to be processed by PHP (command line interface) which are directly responsible for setting read/write/execution rights for files and folders (chown/chmod)

Short answer: Hell yes.

If we could have installed modifications, there's several we would have installed. Unfortunately, as we said earlier, we can't...

Nearly every single mod requires style edits. Even if they had the mod install mod{which is officially supported by PHPBB but not included with the builds), they would still need FTP access for editing template files. They would also need some degree of programming experience because far too often you have to write new sections of code without a foundation to build on.

Modifying two or three is a **Filtered** and a half. Anyone willing to modify the thirty million templates the SGW forum has and for completely free, would have up be a serious masochist.

The amount of styles this forum has is silly anyway.

Yes. GW should reduce to only the Red Tiger Deux template or whatever. The one with the Gatewars logo above it. The one where you can actually vote.



Or just pay someone to make a PROPER Solaris template for PHPBB3.
