Ivory Tower General: SGW!

Greetings! I am Apadamek, Moderator of this forum and general acquirer and hoarder of material goods. This is a concept I have been toying with for a while. In this thread we shall introduce the concept of Armchair Generalling, a nickname military historians have for trying to see what would happen in different battles if they had been general. In this it will be a little different as you won't have as much control over it, nor will these be historical battles. These will be battles of my choosing, following a timeline, starting with a hunter gatherer community battle in the late 9th millennium BCE to ending in a 2009 iraqi battle
.

This is how it works, every free chance I get, I will post a possible battle, for the next day or 2 people will PM me and request to be a General in these battles, there could be 2 generals one week, 4 the next, and only 1 the week after that, it is all up to the god of the story, me. Now the 'generals' will be given a situation in which they have a force of soldiers/people to command against another, both will outfit their troops with equipment, and buy professions such as Archer or Cavalry expert with a select number of "purchasing points" each general receives each situation.

Each general will outfit his army and PM me a battle plan and how his force has been equipped. Also, this map is more crude then they are going to be and the description not as good either, it's a form of Beta-Test/Example Battle to help the other readers understand.
NOW!

The Situation
Image
It is in the late 9th millennium BCE, in the middle of summer. In mesopotamia a small community of 50 souls has taken strategic position on a small stream next to a river. Life is good, they are harvesting some naturally growing plants, fishing and hunting on the river they are next to and constructing shelter in the thick woods that engulfs the area. However a group of Hunter Gatherers of the same number has found the community, and realize the value of the land there. The Hunter Gatherers are grouped at the beginning of the stream, preparing to assault and take the community, unless the community attacks first.

Community Stats:
The general of the community receives: 100 Purchasing Points
The community has all the food it wants, it has been a good summer. They have 30 men able to fight, 5 children, and 15 women. The men can be equipped with
Stone Spears-at 10 points a man
Stone Knives- at 10 points a man
Large Rocks (for bashing and throwing)- at 5 points a man
Sticks- at 0 points a man

You also know the area.

Hunter Gatherer (GROUP B) Stats:
The General of the Hunter Gatherers receives: 85 purchasing points
The Hunter Gatherers are full now but have had a long weary journey where until this point food has been scarce. Now they have found a bountiful stream of fish and wildlife who come to drink from it. It has 35 men able to fight, 5 children, and 10 women. The men can be equipped with
Stone Spears- at 12 points a man
Stone Knives- at 12 points a man
Large Rocks (for bashing at throwing) - at 3 points a man
Sticks - at 0 points a man.

You do not know the area.
------------------------------------------------------------
Each group may have up to 2 weapons a man, I.E. you can have a spear and a knife for one man. Generals will now PM me how they have outfitted there groups or armies, and what there plan of attack is. It is important to PM me so the opposing general will not see your plan. I await the generals submissions.

Re: Armchair General: SGW!

The generals have set their plans, and I have calculated the victor in this battle.

Commanding the Community was M-A. A friend of mine. He chose to equip his forces universally rather then a few elite soldiers. Arming all his men with sticks, and a further 20 with rocks M-A has taken a rather conservative equipping approach.

The commander of the hostile Hunter Gatherers with a taste for the Gentile life was Alex, another friend. Alex realized his superior numbers but inferior supplies meant to equip his soldiers as universally as possible and armed 28 of his 35 men with sticks and stones and the other 7 with two sticks each.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alex sent 28 of his men armed with stones and sticks in a angry frenzy toward the enemy camp with orders to bash and kill all who came close, while 7 others broke off. The second group had only sticks as weapons, but were confident in the distraction by the roaring 28.

M-A ordered his men into 3 lines of 10, each man spaced several meters across from each other and several meters away from the other line. The first line was armed solely with sticks, the others armed with rocks and sticks for throwing.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As the twenty eight men of the Hunter Gatherers came into sight of the thin line that was the first part of the Communities counter attack, they charged them without mercy. With almost 3 to 1 odds they quickly made short work of the first line, receiving one two casualties, one from a stick to the abdomen and an accelerated push into a tree, one from a badly swung rock to the head from an over-zealous ally.

However in the short time it took for the twenty eight Hunter Gatherers to decimate the first line, the second line came into view. They saw what was happening and quickly hurled all ten rocks with deadly force, felling 6 of the angry mob in seconds. As they picked up any stick they could find the second line bravely charged into battle against the larger foe.

The second line was brave but met the same fate, more casualties inflicted at four, but the rocks in the hands of the Hunter Gatherers proved too much, as even a glancing blow could shatter a limb or break through even a thick stick.

Once again another line met the Hunter Gatherers, once again the line slung their stones, felling seven of the Hunters. However this time the Hunters threw their stones at the charging line, felling five of them in quick succession. With only five men left, the line broke and retreated back to grab what they could from the camp and escape to another community.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

M-A lost 25 men and 5 retreated and took 5 woman with them and as many supplies, 3 children attempted to follow but one drowned as the survivors swam the river to find a new life.

Alex lost 17 men but his 18 survivors had emerged triumphant. When the Hunters reached the village they brutally murdered the remaining children and took the women as their own. They took up the community and controlled it with an iron fist for several generations, as shamans and elders told of how they fought and took the land in glorious fashion from the weak owners of before.

Re: Armchair General: SGW!

you did win

I hope that it is a more clear explanation of how it goes, the generals PM me their equipment statistics and battle plans and I will calculate the losses and success of opposing tactics and forces.

Re: Armchair General: SGW!

IT IS....THE SECOND ROUND!
It will be a rather far jump, nearly 6000 years, however it's the start of a huge chain of events, from predynastic Egypt to the Conquests of Sargon of Akkad. Essentially we'll be staying in these millenniums for a while longer!

When generals submit their plan, please use the graph in explaining movement, like for example "Group 2 moves to G3"
The Situation
Image
It is 3178 BCE, and we are in Egpyt. Along the Nile river two groups of aggressors are meeting, one from the city of Naqada, the other from the City of Nekhen. Their respective kings are feuding over several miles of farm land, they have sent two small armies to secure the farm land, and they are preparing to engage.

Group A is from Nekhen, Group B from Naqada. To give this a bit more edge to the generals, they'll be able to buy troop numbers.

Both groups receive 2000 Purchasing Points.

Cost Chart:
1 Slinger 5 points
1 swordsman 8 points
1 Axe-man 7 points
1 Spear Man (throwing and stabbing, please specify the preference) 5 points
1 Club armed man 2.5 points
1 Archer 10 points
1 boat - 600 points (comes with 5 sailors, can fit upwards of 10 soldiers on the decks, can sail close enough to land or bombard the land with slingers, archers and spearmen)
Leather Armor - 5 point a soldier.

Re: Armchair General: SGW!

I'm not reading this at all for one reason - in your first sentence you claim to be an intellectual. You cannot possibly be an intellectual because you do not understand why capitalism is the fundamental rot of society. You are motivated purely by the material word and so therefore are living in an illusion of only what you have acquired. This is essentially atrophying your natural ability to evolve intellectually and socially. You, as a materialist cannot possibly be a socialist or a humanist, you are not a thinker, you are an acquirer. You do not operate from an armchair, you operate from an ivory tower.

Your point is well made, I have edited the title as such.

Your belief that Capitalism is the rot of society is sad, and pretty naive. But hey, everyones entitled to an opinion, and it seems most of us agree that Capitalism is better then the others.

Re: Ivory Tower General: SGW!

I find this satisfactory. Just as long as we all know where we sit/stand/generalise from.

Re: Ivory Tower General: SGW!

The Generals have created their vastly different armies, formed their plans, and gone into battle.

Commanding the forces of Nekhen was prince Horus-Angnoch and his forces brought the power of the nile with them. Two boats with 14 archers and 6 leather clad spearmen sat in the Nile awaiting orders. Complementing this powerful Armada was 25 swordsman clad in leather, led by Horus-Angnoch, 15 archers, 17 spearmen and 16 club armed soldiers.

Commanding the forces of Naqada was the head priest of Set, prince Alex-Set-Hotep. Naqadas forces spurned the life giving river and came in force of numbers, three hundred men were commanded to the battlefield. One hundred archers and two hundred of their best spearmen, personally led by the head priest himself.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Both armies set off at a rapid pace, their meeting point was to be close to the river, at G3 on the map. Alex-Set-Hotep commanded his forces into three great lines of 100 men each, two of the mighty spears and one of archers behind him. They marched slowly and steadily toward the base camp of Nekhen.

Meanwhile Horus-Angnoch sent off his boats while splitting his smaller ground forces into three brutal groups all with different tasks, one to engage the enemy and lead them into a trap, another to flank them and crush them.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
As Alex and his army marched on they came upon the two boats of Angnoch, however their line was turned in the wrong direction and as the line turned for Alex's archers to open fire as a group upon the boats, the arrows of the archers aboard them took the life of several spearman. However once the lines were turned the battle became more even, while the archers aboard the boats were able to fire accurately the en masse arrows of the archers proved to be quite deadly.

As the two sides engaged and traded volleys, the first group of Angnochs forces came into view 25 swordsman, 5 archers and 4 spearmen strong. They were attempting to flank the lines. Quickly the first line of spearmen was dispatched to destroy the flankers but as soon as they were gone from view another group appeared 16 club armed soldiers and 3 spearman, this time attacking from the other vulnerable point of the line, the top side. As the Soldiers of the first line attempted to defend off this newest attack they were plunged into chaos by the firing arrows and mix of men. And the third group of Angnochs forces appeared, 10 archers and 10 spearmen who quickly rushed to aid the second group.

The main line was in chaos from this influx of forces into one of their weakpoints, instead of fighting 100 men front on the groups were hitting two at a time, one archer and one spearmen. as the line attempted to battle this new foe, the second line had engaged the first group. 25 swordsman against 100 spearman was hardly fair odds and though they held them off for the brutal consequences of the archers to be felt, it was not enough and the second line destroyed the first group. '

However as the second line returned they found the main line gone, fled from the combined attacks. Taking the call to retreat the second line followed the main army, despite their promising positions. Among the dead spearmen was the head priest of Set Alex-Set-Hotep, who's head was cut off to prevent him from ever entering the afterlife as a whole soul.

Re: Ivory Tower General: SGW!

This round is going to be a little different as there will be multiple 'rounds'. There is this change because we've reached a point in time where there will be actual generalling and soldiers rather then peasant militia and the like.
