King Babar the elephant

I was wondering if there was anyone else who learnt reading with Babar the elephant when they were small kids?
I myself learnt to read with this character at around 4-5 years old, wondered if I was the only one who learnt with Babar before primary school (or during primary school). :)

Re: King Babar the elephant

Nope. Never had the lessons.

I will say this though..
It tells of a young elephant called Babar who leaves the jungle, visits a big city, and returns to bring the benefits of civilization to his fellow elephants. Then he comes back and becomes king of the kingdom. He then has children and teaches them valuable lessons.
Umm.. Propaganda, anyone?! O.m.g. how overt can we go with this.

It's an almost 80 years comic character...not like it was only one having hidden pro-colonial theories in those days. (not saying it's good message of course, but well, propaganda was in almost all books from this era, and often in a much worse level..)
Tintin visits Congo to name the most famous other one. Openly racist book, however. (I own it among other Tintin books, so I know how it is.)

Don't really care about Babar hidden messages personally, it taught me to read before most other kids from my school.

Re: King Babar the elephant

I remember that I have seen Babar too early, especially the first story where his mother is killed by a damn elephant hunter. It was too violent for me, I was just 3 and half. :o
