Diplomats..

Over the past few months.. I have been thrust into the position where I have to deal with Diplomats.. they range across the many alliances.. but I have to question.. and make the point here and publically of what dim witted leader.. employs someone as a diplomat who.. is one of the following..

1. Is not fluent in english in a game that has mostly english speakers in it.

2. Responds to well mannered diplomatic messages with swearing.

3. Does not read what you write to them and persists to ramble about something long after it has been settled creating new issues.

4. Does not know what an NAP is or the surrender terms to an agreement.

5. Ignores simple questions that could bring an end to the trouble very quickly.

6. Grasp's desperately at wounded pride.

I mean really... common sense much there kids? I could name quite a few names here.. but I ask.. all leaders. Use the grey matter in the back of your heads - assuming you have some - and think about making things a bit easier.

Here.. here.. let me.. give you an example... of a bit of intelligent thought.

1. Diplomats should be fluent in english. If they meet someone who does not speak it, then they should be aware of someone within the alliance or a friendly person who can help translate.

2. Diplomats should be well mannered and composed never resorting to swearing or aggressive language to try and act tough when confronted politely. Even when confronted aggressively it only makes a situation worse to get wound up yourself.

3. Diplomats should be made aware of all alliances agreements, how they were worded and what they mean. Simple terms like NAP's should be EASILy understood. From their basic definition to the realisation they require a two party input.

4. Diplomats primary goals are to mitigate damage to reputation, accounts and personal pride. Whilst try and increase reward, smooth discussion and calm negotiations.

Four easy steps to help improve your diplomats. I expected better from some of the alliances who have thus far employed these dense planks or non-fluent speakers...

May I congratulate you on an intelligent well thought out post.

My pet hate in "dealing" with people who perhaps do not have the mental capacity, temperament or language skills is that they NEVER correctly read and answer all the questions/points put to them.

Its like they get tunnel thinking ......they pick up on one point and single mindedly twist it and answer what they`d like to answer and then convieniently just forget about the rest.

There must be a medical term for this?

Semper, whats the point? People play this game how they wish, and if that to them is how they wish to be a Diplomat, then, by all means let them.

I do however find when speaking with indiviuals that are presented with an easy solution to a matter, that they insist on prolonging the problem and being to stubborn to back down.

Oh and trust me, ive just recently delt with a few of "you".

lol. DC had a very simple solution to solve that problem. He was one.. the others were many, don't (and I cannot believe I am saying this) villainise me over the issue for doing the right thing by my alliance members. If he could not learn his place, that's his own stubbornness and selfishness, not mine.

Semper - you missed a point.

Diplomats should NOT be lawyers, as lawyers are trained to prolong issues in order to increase their gain.

@All lawyers on the forum - I'm an engineer, should you feel the need for a reposte.

More on topic: I know the feeling. It's really frustrating when you get drawn deeper and deeper into an unnecessary confrontation, simply because one of the two sides has an incompetent diplomat. What really gets to me is if the diplomat puts his own ego above the interests of the alliance. Or, as said, if the diplomat simply can't speak proper English. With all due respect, I think it's a little unfair to expect me to understand French, German, Russian, Chinees.... I keep to the common game language, and expect others to do the same.

Another point I'd like to mention is to actually trust a believe in your own diplomate. I have ran into more then one fledgling alliance where they didnt even trust their own diplomate, and when the diplomate was lieing to both sides as well.

Its better to be hated for who you are then loved for who your not.

Diplomates need to carry some weight and authority within an alliance as well, not just be the mouth piece who can not get his own alliance to stick to an agreement he has made.

Just picking up on this point, didn't you try to force him to change race because he was a Sith Lord and you didn't want anyone outside NS to have that race? lmao get over yourself

as for the diplomat issue, some alliances pick a diplomat to make a statement.....if an alliance picks their best warring player for such a position it would basically be saying...we don't negotiate...prepare to fight...some alliance simply do not feel the need for a eral diplomat and that's their choice

On subject, I agree with you on the obsurdity of some so called Diplomats. But then again REK and Renegadze make valid points too. Some players in this game would just rather mass you to the stoneage rather than talk.

On a serious note..and this applies to the rest of you out there who take this thing WAY too seriously...

Don't take this thing so serious... you make it a matter of personal insults and pride.. rather than role play and the laugh it could have been. There is only one major piece of advice I can give you.. and that's to grow up.. and put it all in it's proper context. Either play along or keep having the PMS tantrum you're having. Either way.. I personally win.. first way.. someone who may well be a good player and great guy to know.. matures a bit and returns to his friends and the empire I have been part of forging also it let's everyone get past the situation to have a laugh.. second way I get to keep laughing and having a ball at how low you're sinking over a game.

Fair enough.. lol. If your alliance policy is not to have a diplomat to talk over things with.. that's the way you guys role.. but if you do have a diplomat in earnest, the point of a diplomat is to engage in diplomacy REK, then at least do it properly.

Yes that's true too Lore. I find sometimes.. I like to try and get things done myself rather than trusting the diplomat.. both a glaring statement of my own egocentric nature and confidence and also the 'leaders worry'.

As time has passed though I have found myself getting over that more and more.

@ Tacet. YES.. that's true.. but they should be able to be lawyers. I know from some of the diplomatic work I have done in this game.. sometimes you need to prolong the talking to prepare for war.. the old act of appeasement.
