I'm back, self imposed Punishment is over... This is my first official post for the "Return of Affy"

I suspect it will be this way as it has been for the last few Eras. Keep trying, usually within 24-36 hours you can do the "Self-CO" thing...

Why be your own CO, when you could select me and have a real 'tard' as your CO???

open up your "accepting officers" setting

I was able to add myself as my own commander

and that is the correct answer.. on command center you need to change your status of accepting officers. and update.
