Ok, this maybe in the wrong section, but i posted it here to see if anyone knew how to go about fixing this dam problem,
Windows Live Messenger ( MSN ) crashes randomly on me, it can do it on start up, or it can wait 10 mins, sometimes 30 mins, sometimes it doesnt crash at all, when it does it gives me a report option etc etc,
The event viewer picks it up as this
Faulting application wlcomm.exe, version 14.0.8117.416, faulting module oleaut32.dll, version 5.1.2600.5512, fault address 0x00004ca5.
Or
Faulting application wlcomm.exe, version 14.0.8098.930, faulting module ole32.dll, version 5.1.2600.5512, fault address 0x0004ddae.
The 2nd one is the more common the first one only happened tonight where it called it from a different module,
I have tried researching this forever now and still no joy.
I did the FULL uninstall last night by following this
http://messenger-support.spaces.live.co ... 5345.entry
I thought this had worked as it did not crash last night, but today its back to its usual crap.
The strange thing is, when the error report pops up, if i ignore it, i can use msn like normal, until eventually the computer auto kicks me and closes the report,
I have ran all Anti viris, malware scanners etc etc, my firewall does not block msn at all,
I currently have Windows XP ( SP3 )
All windows updates are up to date, this has been an ongoing problem for months now, i figured it was an MSN issue but alas i guess not.
Thanks
GC

Looking for an MSN expert
Deep within Noob Cave, you find a strange pool filled with a glowing blue liquid. You think back to what your mother told you about unfamiliar liquids found in caves.
You're pretty sure she said "Drink it! What's the worst that can happen?"

Found this
try removing your contact cache store which can sometimes cause all sorts of weird problems (and it's cached on the server anyway, so you don't lose
any data). You do this by pressing the Windows key and R together on the keyboard to bring up the Run box, typing in:
%userprofile%\local settings\application data\microsoft
and click OK. Then find the Windows Live Contacts folder and delete it.

then i found this
Do you happen to be using Windowblinds or a custom Windows theme? If so, switch back to the default Windows one and see if that helps..

If all else fails, try Trillian - I love it, allows more than 1 Instant Message.

Well I can tell you what will definitely work. Re-installing Windows. Besides that it's a crapshoot.

Re: Looking for an MSN expert
you can play around in your registry for hours fixing the issue like I did, or much quicker is as already stated a re-install of windows.
I cannot begin to tell you all the keys I changed to get things to work properly

Re: Looking for an MSN expert
I have,
Avira Anti Virus
Anti Malware bytes
and Firewall is
Kerio Personal Firewall <--ive been using this firewall for over 4 years now.
This is the latest error
Faulting application wlcomm.exe, version 14.0.8117.416, faulting module ole32.dll, version 5.1.2600.5512, fault address 0x0004ddae.
I deleted that contacts folder, but as soon as WLM starts it auto re-creates this folder.

As it should, that is correct - so now we know that nothing is corrupted there.
I vote for a re-image - it'll fix it every time

90% of the time, I've seen it fail before. Did you install anything new lately?

Re: Looking for an MSN expert
if you do not get it fixed, try using aMSN... thats free, and quite similar (except for the lack of ads and the use of tabbed windows)

"Great holy armies shall be gathered and trained to fight all who embrace evil. In the name of the gods, Browsers shall be changed to carry the internet out amongst the peoples and we will spread Firefox to all the unbelievers. The power of the Firefox will be felt far and wide and the wicked users of IE shall be converted to use the true browsers."
Curious about our color? Feel free to ask...

Re: Looking for an MSN expert
Disable you protections and run messenger.
If nothing happens, enable the protections one by one and see if anything messes it up.
Did you happen to uninstall the original msn, or deleted an old msn folder in program files ? (msn 4.6)
This program is listed in the windows add/remove software manager in the configuration screen, under windows components (icon on the left).
If you did, re-install it from the software manager by putting a new tick in the checkbox and then apply. (perhaps remove first, apply and add again)
You don't need to use this, but several files are important to have if your register expects it.
It seems as if some part of visual basic is getting messed up, this can be caused by missing expected files, damaged files or interfering software (protections preventing scripts to run).
