well i MAYBE onto something
we should only allow one way to log out of ur game and thats the log out function. Most of the time when i am done something the way i log out is trough the link bar where you type in "WWW.####.COM " now when i go back to SGW it takes my back to the CC(cammand center) and i am still logged in all that time i was surfing somewhere else.
Maybe if u add a feature that instant logs u off when u goto another site and reduce the "ppl online" that are not actually online because there probbaly somewhere else.
so what do u guys think

Well, considering there is a 'time out' which causes you to log out when you haven't been on the page for a few minutes, it won't make that much difference.
Personally, I think a way of reducing the number of requests would be to add a 'fix all' button in the armory, this is where I spend a considerable amount of time fixing each weapon individually, it takes a while, especially with the all too frequent MySQL errors.
I think it would make a noticable diference.
Less time people spend in the armory = Less time spent with multiple windows (and more requests) = less time spent on SGW = reduced lag.

The biggest save on resources would be a stand-alone program. All it'd need to connect to the server for is to submit changes and get the new data. That would save resources.Spykie wrote:A attack/spy/sabotage button next to a player name on the battlefield page would also save ALOT of mysql resources.
Aswell as a search field on the left side below the logout button (or somewhere around there)
A reply window beneath a received pm.
And more like this....

The most feasable idea yet (the more servers bought, the more peeps will join and clog those servers) But who will make it/them (the programs)? I wouldn't trust anyone who plays this game to do so. They could hack in, put a hidden code in it etc, so the only problem is this: how tamper proof would it be? It would be the solution to all lag though!!!!

In this context, it would be a program wirtten specifically for accessing Stargate Wars via the internet without using the browser. (Stand-alone program isn't Programmer-ese, though, is it?)SGC_Replicators wrote:What is a "Stand Alone Program"
Well, Forum and I exchanged PMs on security, but this is another point. Forum and myself are the only ones who'd probably be trustworthy enough to write such a program. But who will make it/them (the programs)? I wouldn't trust anyone who plays this game to do so. that is hardly a problem, anyone can make and test a program on their on computer, and then send the sourcecode to Forum to be looked over. then Forum can just compile it, and voila no hidden code.

IF:
Nodot could be trusted and advised by forum the patches could be his responsibility! He may be such a capable programmer that they would rarely be needed! If he is volunteering he must have some pride in his know-how eh? Forum could deal with the updates. Sorry Nodot, dont know you very well to assume much, but I'd owe anyone the benefit of an IF.
The idea of stand alone progs is too promising to ignore!!!
I'm no programmer. This is the most advise I can offer.

Yup. It would be pretty much impossible to write a hack-proof program. If you don't believe it, go ask any game company out there. Right now, the only hackable program is running on the server. There's only one place it's running so its a lot easier to secure. I could write a program that could do it, but it would have to be in java, which is easy to hack, and not exactly fast. Guys, just wait a little while longer and the problems should be gone.

As soon as you build an idiot proof system, somebody else builds a better idiot.

I suggested that as well. It frees up bandwidth, php-processing time (i guess) and reduces page loading time.

servers hopefully going live this evening... a couple small problems that have since been resolved...
as for frames - i thought on this too.. possilbe, the only factor is the 'live stats' like 'bank' and online players and turns and such that are in the navigation area.... these would have to move, and only static links stay in the nav frame... .
may do this, but first new servers... if all is perfect, I can delay the re-design for a while
and - as for bandwidth, it's actually not a big deal loading the nav again and again as all the images buttons are cached on people's local machines via the browser functionality.... this is consistent across all browsers...
thanks everyone for your patience to date -- the wait is almost over ... only hours left till the lag goes away!!
