When you go to a restaurant, what do you expect from the wait staff?

For instance, I expect them to keep my drink full. That is the one rule, but I'm strict with it. In general, if they come around enough to keep my drink filled, then they will come around enough to take care of anything else I need anyway.

I WANT efficient service, come when signaled, get the order right, sort any problems without question, polite and with a smile.

I DONT want to be pestered, have them hovering around the table, trying to make you order quickly or leave the moment you finish. Condescending up-themselves people who correct your pronunciation of foreign foods/drinks in front of a date. Questions about the food/service ( if it's remarkable in a good or bad way I wont need prompting to tell them ).



My little sister is a waitress so I know they earn very little and rely on tips and always tip good service well. If the service is bad I dont tip and never return, no second chances in these things.

Also having done silver service myself when I was a teenager I know that if you send food back with criticism you just leave, dont eat food that has been taken out of your sight in these circumstances.

I like to see politeness.
I usually don't need a refill, so as long as they are at least floating around and are there if you have to flag em down I consider them good enough to get a good tip.

I don't need to be an ass and pull apart everything they do, I'm there to eat. As long as its not a terrible experience there is no reason to not tip them what they deserve.

Typically, I drop a percent or two off the tip for each thing they actually mess up with.

For me, it's you get a good tip if you keep my glass topped up, else none.

for me its friendly service and good quality food. I don't mind waiting for a bit if the food is tasty, and presented well. the wait staff I expect to be polite and friendly, but not too intense.

for instance, there was a Chinese restaurant I used to eat at, where the service was decent and the food was well made and presented, and was of high quality. Then the management changed, the service became almost insulting, the food didn't taste anywhere near as good and the quality of food in general dropped (meat tasting old, etc). I haven't returned to the place since, for a number of years.

another example would be an Indian restaurant near here. we tried them out earlier this year, the service was very basic, the meat tasted old and was poorly prepared (fat and grissle all throughout it), the sauce in the curries all had a gritty feel (badly prepared, and over used spices) and to top it off, they threatened legal action against my family when a bad review of their business popped up on a local community website. suffice to say, I will never give them my business again.

I agree with the drink thing, but I'm not too strict about it. To be honest I don't really care if the wait staff is good or not. It really doesn't bother me either way. But if they are good I'm always sure to leave a generous tip
