France’s new socialist government led by Francois Hollande is preparing to reap a collectivist windfall. On Sunday, a new law went into effect mandating all citizens install a breathalyser device on their cars.

A poll released over the weekend reveals that nearly sixty percent of respondents have yet to install the device. If they don’t obey the new rule by November 1, citizens will face a fine of 11 euros, or around $14.

The move to install similar devices in American cars is underway. In 2008, GM and Toyota announced they plan to install breathalyzer interlocks on new cars in a few years. The Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety group received a $10 million research grant for the project from the federal government.

In addition to nanny state measures, France’s new government plans to legalize gay marriage and adoption for same-sex couples. It has also pledged to make life easier for trans-gender individuals.

“A law granting full marriage status to gay couples would bring France, which currently provides only for same-sex civil unions, into line with fellow EU members Denmark, Portugal, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands and Sweden,” Reuters reports.

“It would also mark a profound change in French society, where more than two-thirds of people still describe themselves as Roman Catholic, according to a 2010 survey by pollster Ifop.”

First it's "put your seat belt on or risk a fine" now they think this stupid gadget is going to stop people drink driving!

That's far from being the worst proposal coming from this government!
I'd say on a scale 1 to 10 compared to the rest with 10 being the worst and 1 being the least bad, it's 1.5/10 scaled (due to being possible to be bypassed).

Anyway, what's the problem with being required to have a seat belt while driving/being driven? Seriously you libertarians (only libertarians could find it "offensive") are strange sometimes...

I'll address the last bit first....i have no idea what libertarians believe in but i can tell you what i believe/want from my Govt....LEAVE ME THE **Filtered** ALONE SO I CAN LIVE HOW I WANT TO LIVE!

2ndly, you missed the point about the seat belts...it's always 1 step more, first they fine you for not wearing a seatbelt, next you will be fined if you don't install this crap in YOUR car. in the UK they want to ban people smoking in their cars. it is always the same with Govt, they ask for an inch and you give them an inch, now they don't have to ask, they just take and you stand there and watch. now they take a meter, then it's a mile, then it's 10 thousand miles, then it's the planet and everything on it, then it's the solar system, the galaxy and then the whole damned universe. that's not and exaggeration, that's fact. if Govt thought it possible to take the universe, don't think for 1 second they wouldn't try!


To give you a comparison, Nazi Germany. my time line might not be spot on here so don't go getting all worked up if it is wrong...first the Jews were blamed for Germany's loss in WW1, then Jews are told they should wear the star of David, the Jews responded by saying they should feel proud to wear the star of David. next they were told that Jewish doctors were not allowed to treat German people any more. then the Jews had all their shop windows smashed in...is it time yet to say "enough is enough!"? next the Jews were being publicly vilified for everything wrong with Germany and the whole world, next the Jews are being rounded up and escorted in Ghettos (well first they went voluntarily, then they were escorted, and then dumped in the ghettos...but that's besides the point here). how about now, is now a good time to shout at the top of your voice "THIS FAR AND NO FURTHER!"? next the Jews were rounded up in the middle of the night, packed into trains like sardines and taken to work and labour camps...how about now, is now a good time to say something? next the started using them for target practice and gassing them in the chambers....what about now, is now a good time to ask the nice Germans to please stop? oh wait.....they either gassed you or shot you in the back of the head and you are now 1 of the 6 million Jews that have been killed!

Now that is an extreme way to look at things, but the point still stands...when do you finally stand up and say "enough is enough!"? when they are charging you and me for every mile driven on top of all the taxes they are making from us?

Now I would say ban smoking in personal cars is bit nonsense contrary to public transports. But being required to wear seat belts, I don't see a problem in that. Why would I disagree with first and agree with second and third? Simply because the two latter is also crossing the line of others' freedom.

Who would be the last to laugh when the kid or simply passenger who didn't wear a seat belt for whatever reason will be smashed on the front seat when the car would have used brake in a hurry? However if you want to drive (and maybe smash) your car alone within a deserted place without wearing a seat belt, nobody would disagree. (see my point)

i do think the UK is a major nanny state when the police can arrest someone committing a crime and accidently hurt them then the police officer loses his job for it. this country is making me lose my mind lmao also its your car if you wanna smoke in it its up to you.

BUT

People who drink drive dont need a breath test to tell them they are over the limit, they already know and drive anyways. And any device that set off an external warning or disabled a car if you blow positive would have ways around it.

Also worth pointing out most accidents and road deaths have nothing to do with drink or drugs, just bad driving and distraction, no tech will ever replace police being on the road looking out for bad driving.

A better idea would be fitting all new cars with built in airline style 'Black Boxes' and fore & aft digicams, this would be a massive help in settling accident claims and help take bad drivers off the road regardless of if they have been drinking. Instead of making this law, installing this in older cars could be encouraged with the insensitive of an insurance discount.

Wrong, it is not the place of Govt to tell me anything...unless i have caused harm, property damage or fraud. otherwise Govt works for me (or is supposed to anyway), not the other way around.

If you (or anyone else) cannot understand that then you are nothing more than a slave and deserve all the Govt you will get....just like those stupid Jews (yes i said that) who did not stand up when they should have.


@Jim, we had this conversation before but i will say it again...Govt has no business telling us anything. if i want to wear a seat belt i will, and if i am stupid enough to be involved in an accident then it is my fault, not the Govts for not making a law that requires me to wear a seat belt.
I've been driving for 27+ years and in all that time i have not been in any situation that i thought "i am damned lucky i wore my seat belt" or "damn! that was close, i'm wearing my seat belt from now on!". you can call it luck if you like, i call it being taught how to drive properly by my instructor.

I think what he meant is that the Government represents the majority of the people and since we live in democracies we should all bow to the will of the majority.
