2 things. You can't and the sticky is just a couple of threads above this one. Search, or better yet, read.

The sticky pretty much covers untrained mercs, or at least that was what the topic was started as.

Mercs or mercenaries can be any one of three things:
(1) untrained mercs(UM)
(2) attack mercs(AM)
(3) defense mercs(DM)
*for the pusposes of this explainiation I will use the abbreviations. 'Super soldiers' or 'super units' are the most expensive units you have in your training page(should be att./def units).

I think you were asking more of how do I get AM and DM?

Mercs can be purchased in the game through the mercenary marketplace, in the market window(at the top...yes it's there). You can get mercs at the satrt of each new round/turn. You have to be quick or you will miss your chance, as other people want them too. If you miss your chance there will be a caption saying you don't have enough resources or some hogwash...

Mercs are pretty much the dumb ones that you send out in front during a battle to get turned into swiss cheese(an analogy/metaphor?).

I've been considering the actual role and effectiveness of mercs, and deciding what to post, so here it is. This may confuse you(if you don't want to take the time to understand it or don't like to think then don't read it):
At last I knew, AM and DM add to the attack and def foumulas an equal amount as the reg attck and def. trained units(add the same value to formulas determining what your attack and defense strength is). They cost 1000-1200 more than reg. att./def trained(don't know about other races). I think the usefullness of it comes into play in that if you buy mercs and train reg. attak/def. into what 'super soldiers' your realm might have, they provide the same values for the formulas as the trained att/def. units do, and you have the trained att/def. to make into super soldiers.

What that whole paragraph means is that for a little more naq you have the flexibility to do what you want with your UU if you buy mercs for own down side and two up's. (1 Down) cost more, (2 UP) can get AM and DM then decide if you want to train UU into att.def. units or super units, and add the same as reg att/def to the formulas.

ie. 1(for example with tauri)
200 AM=600,000naq
200 attack super sold.=cost to train into reg+cost to train into super=360,000+16,020,000=16,380,000
total naq cost: 16,980,000

attack: 1000 for AM + (in the 10-20 range for super sold.)2000-4000=3000-5000

ie. 2
200 reg. attack units=360,000naq
200 attack super sold.=cost to train into reg+cost to train into super=360,000+16,020,000=16,380,000
total naq cost: 16,740,000

attack: 1000 for reg att units + (in the 10-20 range for super sold.)2000-4000=3000-5000

So, it costs a little more for the mercs but instead of using 400UU to get to super soldiers without mercs, you be only using 200 with mercs, to have the same range of attack power. So you have that other 200 UU to do what you want with(let them take cooking lessons, swimming, etc.).

K

Note: I can't remember the exact addition that supers add, but something in 10-20, and if you mention AM of DM outside this post people might not know what your talking about. If the super units add something like log e to the inverse phi squared then forget what my numbers are...I wasn't aware of such change due to my limited play nowadays...
p.s. I'm so glad no one else posted with a more consise version of what I'm saying, it would suck to have to delete it all...this took too long to type out but was a good distractions from school...now back to work...
p.p.s. how can I get "forum reqular" changed to "Uber Long Poster" :P more fitting maybe?
