How does one get rid of expired alliance requests?

Do you mean requesting to enter an alliance youself, or requests from the alliance for you to join them?
If its the former, you need to go to the page that you selected the option "Ask To Join" - there will be the list of alliances but no options to ask to join, thats because you can only do one at a time. Find the allinace you requested to join, and there will be the option to "cancel" that request. Once you done that, thats it, you can choose another alliance to request membership of.
