Ok, lets start by saying what we already all know: the technology section is completely obsolete. Even for new players, it would take about 2 attacks to gain the naq needed to get all the upgrades.
So, it needs a reform.
I'm just going to chuck out a few suggestions, and you can say what you think of them, and make suggestions yourself.
My first two suggestions are pretty simple, and its my third suggestion that's really imho the good one (though it would need the most coding of the three).
Firsty, you could have some sort of progressive tech upgrades, like in Quantum. The only problem of this is that age old problem: it would widen the gap between the powerful and the not-so-powerful. To get around this, prices could be a proportion of income.
Secondly, you could go for "base stat" upgrades, like in Ascension (Am I allowed to mention that?), or Chaos. Again, the same problem about widening the strong/weak gap applied though.
So, the third option.
Basically, this proposes that the tech system is completely revamped. Instead of just buying technology, you'd have a "Research Centre".
In this research centre, you'd assign naquada (the capital), untrained units (the researchers), and turns (the time it takes to research new stuff) in to a variety of areas of research.
These fields could be as follows (there are probably many others I have not thought of):
-Defence
-Attack
-Covert
-Anti-covert
-MS
-Weapons
-Ships
-Unique techs
The results of researching in these areas would be like the following:
-Percentage bonuses to stats, like there are at the moment.
-Fixed bonuses to stats, like with planets.
-New weapons.
-Modifications for MS, or if fleets were introduced to the game, new ships and ship upgrades.
-Unique technologies like those that the Original 4 races have (you could think of hundreds of cool things for these).
-Special bonuses that you could gain which give you an advantage over other races eg. 10% bonus to attack when you attack the Goa'uld if you're Tau'ri.
The idea would be that it takes a while to uncover a new technology, even with large amounts of resources put into the system. There would also be a random factor as to what and when you get stuff.
Alternatively, you could have a set "Research Rate", like UP, which you can upgrade (with naq, UU and turns), which determins how often you get new technologies. Then you'd simply assign what percentage of focus you give to each area, which decides which areas you get the new discoveries in. If you ever played the game "Birth of the Federation", thats the kind of thing I'm thinking of.
In addition to this, you could then have a new type of spy available, that you can use to infiltrate other people's realms to steal their technologies.

The third option sounds like master of orion 2. Not bad though.
Never argue with idiots. They bring you down to their level and beat you with years of experience!

Admin could also use the system to introduce some sort of story-events to the server.
For example, pretending that replicators aren't already a race, one day an account could discover replicator blocks. Their account then gets "taken over" by the replicators (i.e. they change race to replicator), and the plague spreads from account to account. It would then be up to the un-infected accounts to stop the plague, either by destroying infected accounts, or by finding anti-replicator technology.
Obviously, this can't happen as Replicators are already available, but its an example of the kind of thing I'm thinking of.
Perhaps something to do with the Ori?
Or maybe even a disease, which accounts can contract if they try to steal tech from an account with the disease.
Still, if you don't like this story idea forget it - the main point is the Research Centre.

I agree! This game needs some improvements! And I think is not so difficult to add some.
And not only as "game logic", but also as technology. Now a lot of web application use AJAX to make communication between server and client more "friendly". I want to be able to change something in a place in page without reloading all page. (like in gmail - for example).
I want to be able to do some custom setings on my account (here are some suggestions):
- custom attack log (only Attacks on You, or only Attacks on Others, or sorted attack log - by any column in report).
- custom battlefield: custom number of displayed players, sort, exclude races, only one race, etc
- galactic bank: (this should be implemented fast - I saw a lot of players request(ed) some changes on the bank) a place than can loan naq to anyone (for a fire interest).
- some new planets
- some new facilities
- new weapons
- some new "economical" improvements (miners are obsoleted)
and...
(but not the last)
a new user interface!

gotta agree, 3 is the best. tis quite good,
but *points to my structures suggestion thread* if we combine my suggestion and yours we could make a mega super suggestion that would revolutionise the game!!
or failing that yours is pretty good on its own
w00t for good suggestions! way to break the mould!

Already saw third option in other game I don't play anymore...I think first is cool (with income proportion)

If u keep the game to simple, a lot of players get bored! I'm playing for a lot of time... 2 years+ this game, and except the planets and market, was nothing changing (as major change) from the first version of the game. The game is the same as it was 2 years ago.
I think it's time to do another major changes: new something. (and something means one or more of the point discussed on this topic)

I like option 3 but the only downer is that the higher ranked players and the people with UBER income and unlimited resources will max that out in no time.
I guess a certain decrese in how the production goes would keep some of those UBER players at bay for a certian ammount of time
Example: Ranks 1 to 500 would take perhaps 3 days for their first upgrade
ranks 501 to 1500 would take 2 days ranks 1501 to 3000 would take 3 days and so on so forth, just so that some of the top players don't get a massive lead over everyone else so fast.
