Not mine! I taught my two how to drink from the toilet if they are thirsty.

Seriously though......? That story made me utterly sick. Crap - there is no excuse for letting your children's hair be "matted with cat's urine" I know what I would like to do to that couple.... but this post would be severely edited.

Now, off to go and unlock the children from the shed..... umm.. I mean... change the DVD >_> <_< >_>

Thanx for posting this, I knew I forgot something...now where did I leave them :-k
On a serious note that is terrible, it should be worse than 12yrs in gaol, they deserve to have their reproductive organs removed so they could never again infect the gene pool. There are some people in this world that really make you sick sometimes.
Never argue with idiots. They bring you down to their level and beat you with years of experience!

Really? An addiction is an addiction.

I don't know if they were really addicted, but...

...are the symptoms and effects on people, families, and society with addictions to games any different from an addiction to crack cocaine, herion, or opium and its effects on people, families, and society?

Re: If you have kids, read this

You wouldn't be a prostitute for a video game addiction.

An addiction is an addiction, however there are some addictions that are more powerful. Crack, Cocaine, Heroin,Opium, PCP, Prescription pills, Morphine are way more severe of an addiction than say video games. One can not truly compare the two.

"...are the symptoms and effects on people, families, and society with addictions to games any different from an addiction to crack cocaine, herion, or opium and its effects on people, families, and society?"

You wouldn't be a prostitute for SGW naq, would you? You wouldn't mug an old lady for UU, would you? You wouldn't pawn all of your possessions and all of the possessions of anyone you know for attack turns, would you?

Re: If you have kids, read this

really vinny?

I have no idea what effect psychoactive substances have on the human mind, nor do I know that video games ellicit/create create a significantly different state in someone's mind than that of psychoactive chemicals.

I am not minimizing addiction to hard chemicals, but asking if the possibility would exist that the symptoms of addiction are more common and widespeard (to things like video games) that what it seems people here have considered.

I wouldn't be surprised if what Jack mentioned happens, and I think there is a commonality among addictions, be that to psychoactive chemicals, gambling, or video games.

Re: If you have kids, read this

You say that you would not do that for crack and I have to say have you ever been a crack addict? I have not, but crack heads will do crazy things for their drug. A lot of crack head prostitutes live in Waterbury, a city that I used to hang around in.

As I said, an addiction is an addiction. However things such as drugs and alcohol have much more control over ones body than say video games. Also if someone can post a link of video games physically changing someones body I would love to see. I believe video games are a mental addiction, and the mind is quite a powerful ally and enemy.

First Paragraph:
I don't know who you are talking to, but what I said was:

"I have no idea what effect psychoactive substances have on the human mind, nor do I know that video games ellicit/create create a significantly different state in someone's mind than that of psychoactive chemicals."

Second Paragraph:
How do you know that chemicals has much more control over someone's body or effect on their mind?

http://www.cyh.com/HealthTopics/HealthT ... 95&id=2375
There is a section on "Living Online", "RSI", and "Addiction".

Psychoactive means that it has an effect on the persons mind, like crack, LSD, pot, opium, etc. I think that video games effect the mind just like chemicals, but to what degree I do not know.

Re: If you have kids, read this

The first paragraph was addressed to the person above me.

"I think there is a commonality among addictions, be that to psychoactive chemicals, gambling, or video games."

An addiction is an addiction. I have repeatedly stated that. Any addiction effects someones mind. However I am saying that an addiction to say heroin is much more severe than an addiction to video games. You can show all of the scientific findings you want on how video games are addicting.

To prove that heroin is more addicting than video games make someone a video game addict and an heroin addict. Watch that person and see what he chooses. I guarantee you that it will be heroin. If video games are as powerful as heroin, coke, etc then they should be banned.

Re: If you have kids, read this

the only thing i see wrong with this is that the Maximum Sentence they can recieve is 12 years. im sorry my step dad does that with my little brother all day. he is either sleeping or playing on the computer and if you try to tell him any different then he gets violent. video game addictions can get really bad to the point of abuse and even murder. i had a friend whos dad was a total crack head and video game addict. 1 day while he wasn't stoned he found that one of his games had been messed with and he wasn't in the exact spot that he was when he left. he went on to shoot my friend and his mom each 3 times before he took off in his car and eventually ran into a tree and nearly killed himself. i will try to find the story on the Newspaper website here but it has been about 8 years now so im not sure if i will be able to. these kind of things are serious and are really sad that people take games so seiously.

Re: If you have kids, read this

Yes, I clearly have no idea of how addiction effects the body and mind even though I have in the past have had an addiction that was to a drug.

Now I am addicted to cigs and coffee.

Still I have no idea.

True I have not scientifically studied the effects of drugs on ones mind and body. I have just experienced them.

I just can not see how an addiction to video games could be even considered on the same par as an addiction to drugs.

I have played video games for a very long time. I have never been addicted to video games even though I would play a game all day long, every day. the only reason I did it was because I was bored, not because I experienced euphoria.

Re: If you have kids, read this

I see what you are saying with not being able to see how games can be addiction.

When the internet 'came out' for general use in the early 90s, reports were coming out that people were addicted to it. I couldn't believe that but it was true.

We all deal with different things in our own unique ways.

Re: If you have kids, read this

Sorry, but I just don't buy it. They chose to go out and buy a games system. They chose that game over their children's wellbeing. We can't just shake our heads and say "Addiction is a sad sad thing" because the children are suffering. They are adults, they made a choice. And they inflicted the consequences of it on those who didn't.

We have a terribly serious situation in Australia here right now. In the top end of the country in the Aboriginal communities there has been a crisis of alcohol/petrol fuelled child abuse. And by child abuse, we are talking about 9 month old babies being molested, 3 year old girls and boys being treated for STD's, incest, and other physical violence. And it is just so ingrained and inherent no one knew what to do about it. So it continued. The red flags went up 7 years ago. And in June it was acted upon.

The Government sent in the Australian Defence Forces to take over 60 indigenous communities. Everyone was stunned, and quite a lot of us (including myself) were horrified. BUT it all comes down to - the children are precious. Infinitely so. Whatever needs to be done to ensure that children are able to grow up without abuse, molestation or neglect then do it. And do it sooner, rather than later.

These poor Aboriginal children were born in to a culture that is rife with poverty, cyclical rape/incest, and solvent addiction. Children in places like Darfur are forced into conflicts as soldiers. Whereas the children in that story were similarly neglected because their parents had enough money to buy a big screen tv. Only in the First World is that acceptable. And we have our priorities seriously out of whack if we consider it so.

no one is minimizing the effect on the families.

for my posts I have tried to focus on suggesting that this might have very well been a serious addiction

People make bad choices and others are hurt.

I don't have any kids so I don't know what it would be like to consider losing or having one harmed.

but know that no one is minimizing what has happened.
