Court of public opinion

Well, since this is a first for me and I'm trying to keep an open mind, what is your opinion on the following situation?

I've been accused of extortion. That is to say, I was told that what I was doing "seemed like extortion" so I suppose it wasn't a direct accusation. I found this somewhat amusing because I'm generally on the side of people being extorted and thought to myself, "Have I become what I've strived to prevent?"

You tell me...

Woke up this morning, logged on to bank and found this:

04:15 xxxxxxx 53,285,706,210 Naquadah stolen 15 5396 5908 31,575,286,512 490,614,557,810
(name edited for privacy and to avoid embarrassment, obviously)

First farm entry in my log for probably 2 weeks or more. Sent PM saying:

sigh. I won\'t bother with long, drawn out speeches about how that wasn\'t very wise. Please broker back the naq so I don\'t have to take further action. Thanks.

No response for several hours. Painted a kitchen cabinet. Sent follow up PM:

Maybe I didn\'t clarify my intentions and terms. You have 12 hours from the time of your farming hit (4:15 gametime) to broker back the naq you took. If you choose not to do so, I begin removing planets. I\'ve already looked over your list and you don\'t even have a single defense that I can\'t smash in a single hit.

I\'m a reasonable person but I don\'t tolerate farming hits. My feeling that is if someone wants to hit my pitiful defense and take naq, they should be prepared to lose significant investments in planet defenses and upgrades as a consequence.

Anyway, think it over and I await your response.

Received PM many hours later:

for one Naq hit ur going to let me waste ur account :)

i personally wouldn\'t bother about 1 53 bil Naq hit since what would be lost on both sides

but since i don\'t even know if id be allowed to pay you even if i wanted to you should talk to my alliance leader

Follow up:

ROFL. You have 2.5 hours left.

And then the shocker response:

on a side note this seems like extortion to me

just a note

Oh, just to dispel the idea I might be picking on a weaker player, I have an army size of 37 million, he has 47 million. I'm a Prior (1 ascension), he's an LG. We're both in normal realm.

Ok boys and girls, you decide. Am I extorting naq from this player?

It isn't extortion, though.

It's heavy handed, yes, and somewhat overzealous, but it definitely isn't any form of extortion. Whoever that person is needs to look it up in a dictionary.

One fair naq hit means, what? I'm assuming you mean that his strike exceeded my defense, therefore, any naq taken was taken "fairly". Correct?

So, if I used a single 15 turn attack against one planet as a response, because my fleet strength exceeded his planet defenses, would that also be a "fair hit"?

I'm really not trying to start a fight. I'm curious about this position you've taken.

Certainly not extortion, but a slight overreaction to a single and fair hit?

Re: Court of public opinion

he is just wanting his naq back so for it to be extortion he would have to request more then what was taken.

Well, he took your naq once. It's imho no big deal, as naq hit happends. If I were you, with your fleet power, I'd take one of his planets, it would be far more reasonable and less harsh. But it's just my opinion. Taking all of his planets is a bit... well, low.

As far as I am concerned, I'd just send him polite notice of not doing such thing again. Failing to such polite notice... well, that's different.

Re: Court of public opinion

no way! You have the right to defend yourself and find a way to get your naq back. If that is extortion than any policy that alliances have that say (if you steal naq, we mass your alliance) is extortion too, which it isn't.
Have fun i'd say

maybe a "half naq back compromise would be good to offer tho. and if he says no, then nail 'im"

Re: Court of public opinion

Hardly an over-reaction.

People, who've posted in this thread, mass after the first naq hit, when they don't keep defense's up. Then require the naq back. So I hardly think that stating you're going to remove a planet, if they don't return the naq, is extortion. More of a ... trade. He took your resources, you fancy them back. These are the reprocussions if you don't.

Ok, fair enough. Taking more than one planet would be overkill and mean. Got it.

Tell me, if someone farms your alliance, what is the usual/typical response? Granted, this isn't a lot of naq and I'm assuming the response is proportional to the hit but if someone hit your alliance leader for 50-some-odd billion naq, what would you guys do?

What about anyone else? What do you do?

Well, as I said, one naq hit is fair. Making habit from hitting the same alliance/person is something different. Usually, after one naq hit polite message is enough.

I am not saying you need to follow my own standards, mate, but you did ask for opinions of the community. I am just one of many here. Up to you what you'll do.
