Remembrance Day in Australia

Remembrance Day is the day Australians remember those who have died in war.

In 1918 the armistice that ended World War I came into force, bringing to an end four years of hostilities that saw 61,919 Australians die at sea, in the air, and on foreign soil. Few Australian families were left untouched by the events of World War I - 'the war to end all wars' most had lost a father, son, daughter, brother, sister or friend.

At 11am on 11 November we pause to remember the sacrifice of those men and women who have died or suffered in wars and conflicts and all those who have served during the past 100 years.

The central element of Remembrance Day ceremonies is the one minute silence.

A Melbourne journalist, Edward George Honey, first proposed a period of silence for national remembrance in a letter published in the London Evening News on 8 May 1919.

The suggestion came to the attention of King George V. After testing the practicality of five minutes silence - a trial was held with five Grenadier Guardsmen standing to attention for the silence - the King issued a proclamation on 7 November 1919 which called for a two-minute silence. His proclamation requested that "all locomotion should cease, so that, in perfect stillness, the thoughts of everyone may be concentrated on reverent remembrance of the glorious dead".

At 11am on 11 November 1919, Australians, for the first time, paused and stood in silent tribute to the men and women of the Australian Imperial Force who died on battlefields in the Middle East, Gallipoli and Europe.

In 1997 the Governor-General issued a Proclamation urging all Australians to observe the one minute silence on Remembrance Day. It is still appropriate for two minutes silence to be observed.

Are they that different? There battles have encompassed entire careers and lives within the game, the most bitter and epic of enemies, neither will leave while the other stands... the ultimate climax, will it ever come?
Who knows. One things for sure, the Freedom Fighter is in it for the long haul, its in her head now,
and she must save the world or die trying.

Re: Remembrance Day in Australia

Your Canadian brothers remembers the Australians that fought and died beside us, in the trenchs, on the seas and in the air. We shall remember, we shall learn, we shall not repeat!

Lest We Forget, that that came before giving their lives so that ours may learn a lesson long in the teaching.

Remember
For I shall.

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

John McCrae (1872 - 1918)

We Shall Keep the Faith

Oh! you who sleep in Flanders Fields,
Sleep sweet - to rise anew!
We caught the torch you threw
And holding high, we keep the Faith
With All who died.

We cherish, too, the poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led;
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies,
But lends a lustre to the red
Of the flower that blooms above the dead
In Flanders Fields.

And now the Torch and Poppy Red
We wear in honor of our dead.
Fear not that ye have died for naught;
We'll teach the lesson that ye wrought
In Flanders Fields.

Re: Remembrance Day in Australia

May they rest in peace.

Now i've shown my respect, time to get down to business. I'm sure people all put on a good show, but they don't really give a **Filtered**. They still go invade other countries, persecute groups that are different, and generally act sinful. The ANZACS that died don't want us to stop for 1 minute during our materialistic lives, to remember them, once a year. They want us to live lifes to try AVOID wars through proactive action, not passive stand-still-for-a-minute-or-two-and-maybe-it-will-make-a-difference **Filtered**.

I hope i've been rude, its my intention to get people to think about what they are doing, instead of blindy following it.

(btw, those who know of Chasers war on everything, the recent episode where they go to a random shop, and anounce this rememberance minute, and make a couple of deliberate time stuffups, which meant people were standing for like 5 minutes, will see that its not just me that sees through the shallowness)

Anyway, rest in peace guys, pray for this generation that we cease waging war before its too late.
Hmmf, i don't remember making that previous sig.. oh well >_>

Re: Remembrance Day in Australia

Do not come in here with your crap, this is a topic of remembering the great men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice so we can all live. Not for you to point out any fault in the workings of world affairs. I am quite frankly disgusted that you would come in here with your propaganda and disrespect the people that have died for our nation or currently serving for your nation.

I myself am a serving member of the Australian military and have had generations of my family serve in military, for you to come in here and disrespect them gets my blood boiling.

Re: Remembrance Day in Australia

Ok now that I have had a minute to calm down, I would like to aplogise for my last post, I wrote that in the heat of the moment. I just don't want anyone coming in here and giving their 2 cents on what should be done in the world. Everyone has the right to their own opinion, I guess I am saying this is not the right topic or place to post it in. Once again sorry for my outburst.

Yes, Lest we forget the sacrifices of our predecessors...

Thelen, the 'Chasers' team have no moral conscience. Their thinking has no place in Australia...

Re: Remembrance Day in Australia

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

My great uncle fought on the beaches in Normandy and he was one of the lucky ones who survived thankfully and he has an impressive array of medals as well, which when you look out, you are filled with pride.

One thing is, he will never talk about what happened, no one knows what he saw and went through but I can bet you it was not pleasant and the same goes for all of the war veterans.

It is because of their valor that we are here now, each of them made a sacrifice for us and what upsets me the most is not when people are disrespectful about it (although that is upsetting) but when people forget all together the 11th November. Is it too much to ask to remember all who have fought for us and fallen in battle so that we can have our freedom, by remembering them one day a year?

I shall never forget their courage and I wear my poppy with pride and as long as people remember what they did, their legacy will never be forgotten and if you do just one thing today, go to your local war memorial, read every name and say thank you.
