It's true there are cross platform programs, but they tend to not work as well on Linux, in my opinion.

I find no problem with MS office. Even switching from office 2000 docs to 2003.

Tell me what you need to do and I will tell you of a program that does it in Linux :D Seriously-except for games and a few programs that have a very small user base I have yet to find something I can't do in Linux-usually with free software too!

The only reason I have gone to such great links to get a decent computer, video games.

You can't play most games on Linux. Which is why I use Windows XP. Later I'll must likely add Vista as a secondary OS, for the Vista only games, but for now I'm happy with XP.

That is the ONLY reason I know of to run Windows... And it doesn't count for me coz I don't play any games really-except for starcraft and that runs under Linux. Of course I haven't tried crossover with those games-theyd probably work then...

For me, computers are all about the games multimedia and web surfing, everything else is just an added bonus.

LOL... Well, some of us work with them every day, all day long... I haven't just used a computer for games since elementary school :P

Even if it weren't for games, I'd still use Windows for the ease of use.

I look at it the other way-if it weren't for the fact that I need to use Windows for some of my work stuff I'd only use Linux-for ease of use...

haha i second that, i used to run Vista Ultimate, which was great... except there are to many bugs, so i've reverted back to XP (gotta find my media centre disk).

Halo 2 is not a vista only game though ;) it CAN run on xp...

Mac = Windows ;) they are just better at what they are designed to do...best

I just bought a shiny new laptop, with Vista Ultimate. Plugged it in, went to Windows Update, 5.2Gb of updates (which is a bit of a nightmare because I'm on a screwed up 128kbps connection).

Yeah, Microsoft have kind of lost the place...

Coming from a time when my first "real" PC was an IBM AT with a 10Mb hard drive. My first upgrade was 300 quid worth of RAM chips to bring it up to 3Mb for some huge Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheets I was developing for a client. LOL... It's kinda hard to visualise wth they need 5.2Gb for...

For my next trick, I'll be trying to dual-boot with Leopard (not a vmware install - I'm a masochist. Going to try to wrestle the thing into running native...:) )

It's hard enough to get it to run in a VM. lol. but if you get it running native-please let me know! I'm happy to run it as an alternative OS (particularly now that I can get to a terminal) I just hate paying extra for the hardware, and any repairs, etc.

My high school English classesjust got mew PC's so the tech guys decided to run linux because it's safer.....plus I'm guessing the price had soemthign to do with it lol. I've only saw it like twice so I don't even know if they are running a certain version or they made it themselves. lol

Yes linux is so amazing, frees up so much stuff, plus you ca ndo whatever you want, easily. :D

Nah, it's actually quite easy to get it to run.

Getting it to run properly, now that's a different story (in particular display drivers, lan drivers, audio drivers, wireless). Haven't got my hands on the dvd yet (waiting for it to arrive) so I haven't even started looking for the necessary hacks or drivers yet... I'll keep you posted on the progress...

Check engadget, btw. Or was it Gizmodo? One of the two. Some nutcase has installed it on an Asus Eee PC (the 4Gb/512Mb model). He gave up with leopard (although he did get it running) and reverted to tiger for a bit snappier performance on the modest hardware. I've been thinking of getting the 8Gb/1Gb model for when I'm on the road so hmmm...
