LiQuiD wrote:this has to be handled very carefully to avoid an escalation. lol it seems georgia thought this a good chance to crush resistance. they put their paw in a trap and now its snapped closed. they cant fight russia. no way. they will back down or loose. the west wont intervene unless georgia itself is under threat of total invasion. russia knows this so it will not try to conquer them.

theres too much resources involved for any country to want a large scale war. all sides seem to have valid points for this conflict but launching the attack was not wise. diplomacy is better than war when the russians/west are involved.

i see this with ossetia becoming independant, with the west recognising it. georgia seems to have lost a lot of face in this and has diminished its position.

0) Russia is not a fallen superpower, you are most likely not familiar with various russian military capabilities, but trust me they are more than a match for even US forces. (and i'm talking only conventional warfare here)
1) georgia would have never done anything on their own, so the only way to explain this is washington giving green light
2) russia will strike harder the longer this issue takes, Saakashvili also invaded another region where russian peacekeeping forces were stationed (can't remember the name now)
3) if russia would go large scale war there wouldn't be anything but rubble left from georgia after a few hours. Note: Georgia declared war-status, Russia doesn't need declare anything (think of it a 5 year old kid trying to attack an adult)
4) ossetia never will and never wanted to be independent, they always wanted to belong to russia

I disagree.. with a few points. 1) Washington is probably not backing Georgia because they have their own problems right now. The COLD WAR IS OVER!!! Russia has a declining population, declining standard of living(this is starting to Flatten out) and has a potential aids epidemic on their hands. The war being started by Russian influence makes more sense because they have a growing descent growing amongst their people over the declining living standards and increased mortality rate. Can you think of a better way of instilling national pride then defeating an aggressor army and liberating a region from invaders(WWII....?). If you knew the history of the region though you would know that this conflict has been brewing for quite sometime so its no surprise it went off. Russia will probably win this war and get back some of its pride, which just maybe the kick start they need to get their country out of what i consider the tail end of the Russian Great depression.

Maybe the cold war is over, but the neo-colonialist+neo-imperialist foreign policy of the USA remains.
And by saying that you have most likely no clue about political strategies and common sense. A tiny country will never go provoking a superpower without knowing it has the backing of another strong country.

You seriously need to get some fresh air and need to read up on some real information instead of the right wing several decades old propaganda.

nvm, i forgot that russians also smell of vinegar, wash their beards with vodka, even woman have beards and they fluoridate your water to make you more succeptible to brainwashing.

I know the history of a lot of regions quite well, most likely even better than you. Why? I have my reasons.

And again you have no understanding of russian mentality because of it I'll explain you a simple concept even I hold on to.
There are 2 types of people, one who constantly needs to proove to others their strength in order to keep up their pride and show how tough they are, i.e. Georgia. And there are the kind of people who know how strong they are, they know they don't have to care and they really don't care about what others think of them. They also don't need to proove anything to themselves but they will hold their ground when some idiot from group 1 goes and annoys them year after year and finally crosses the border by attacking their troops without any good reason.

Re: 2008 South Ossetia War

1 point no one has touched on here is that elections in america are looming and if the russians are provoked further and this escalates as a result then a national emergency could easily be declared in the states the elections (not that it makes a single bit of difference who you vote for) and constitution will be suspended making Bush a dictator proper, instead of hiding his dictatorial powers as he has been doing.

this is not cool at all :(

BTW. uro is correct when he tells you that russia's military is not as weak as people think, for the past 10 years russia has been growing as an economic power with its massive amount of natural resources which many country's in the west depend on heavily and its economic surplus they have the cash and now the power to once again stand toe to toe with ANY nation...

they could probably kick america and england off the mainland if we even dare to try and invade them, and they would most definitely nuke us if we even try it.

Re: 2008 South Ossetia War

You may not like the politics and youre certainly right to believe that Russian intentions are not purely selfless help to ossetians here but saying that what Chinese and Russians do is some fluttering on a tail end of a depression is completley out of touch with reality. In fact in the last couple of years their economies have been far "healthier" than any western one. In a decade or so China will be the new heart of the world economy and Russia the new Saudi Arabia.
Like it or not we`re gonna have move past the whole "godless commies that we`ve beaten" thing. The commies learned to play our capitalistic game and are now beating us at it heh.

Russia is doing what it`s doing precisely becuase it`s back on its feet. Who`s gonna protest? EU that depends on Russian oil/gas? US that`s allready overextedned with 2 wars and a planned maritime blocade of Iran heh? And besides, we`re gonna protest cos they`re starting to play the game we staked rules for too lol? Sucks, but the boot is starting to swap feet. Or atlest the missing pair got found :P

1 bad side-efect I see... McCain will win the presidency... despite him still treating Russia like a 3rd world country heh. But and outside enemy is a republicans mana from heaven. If you didnt think things could get any more right-wing, just you watch heh. Tis gonna be terrefyingly funny.

Re: 2008 South Ossetia War

i believe i was the one who first said that obama wont get in and McCain will be the next president...

anyways, if McCain gets in then he will implement the draft, he will have to because america is stretched as it is.

americans better wake up and wake up quick time, because we HAVE to chose a better road than the 1 we're on.

Re: 2008 South Ossetia War

thinking bush will use this to become a dictator = lol.

there is only 1 superpower at the moment. thats the usa. they spend more on their military than nearly the whole of the world combined. i believe russia doesnt spend much more on their forces than the uk. the russian military is mostly old and in poor repair. they show their strength by sending out ancient bombers to 'scare' nato. these bombers are met by advanded interceptors. the usa has technology and hardware beyond any other country. you spend over 300bil per year on somethin and you get benefits.

in a few years id imagine china catches up and there will be another superpower. but theres no way russia could realistically challenge nato in a conventional war.

didnt ossetia want to be united with their northern fellow ossetians? and isnt north ossetia fairly independant although its within russia?

either way this war is a very bad thing. georgia needs to back down and russia needs to pull out.
