What the georgians did was violate their promise/treaty (can't remember which one) that they would not use violence to settle their territorial disputes. Then they launched an invasion on the regions of ossetia and abkhazia attacking the civilian population/rebel forces/russian peacekeepers and killing some in the process.
Obviously russia decided to step in to make sure their citizens stop getting killed.
that may well be the case, i can not say with any clarity on the actions of geo. in this matter. However, the movement of Russian forces beyond the areas in dispute, that is clearly wrong to me. If Russian citizens are in danger (any to my understanding they are Geo.with dual passports), then pull them out of there. If the territories in dispute between Russia and Geo. are the central issue, the Russians are more than able to draw a line in the sand and act as peacekeepers, not mother state to sidelight countries, and play out cold war tats. For me, it would be like the people in upstate ny who live in the us, but have ties to canada, getting rowdy, the us putting down the unrest, only to have canada move frces al the way down to NYC. a bit over killi'd say.
