hah. well in some respects i agree, like a lack of codecs etc on a vanilla install etc etc, it was a rubbish OS. however for its time it was pretty much a brilliant OS. still had the old look of win98 and all those, but it was based on new technology, and in my experience quite stable. not as much as XP but like i said....
"for its time"....

if you want a bad windows OS to laugh at, i'd suggest Windows ME. blue screens of death everywhere from what ive heard of it. lol

ive only tried it out in a virtual machine, i dont have the cash on hand for a DVD to burn the iso unfortunately. it seems to run ok, next step is to get a DVD and burn and install that way directly rather than VM...... lol should run well.

and win7 will be different, theyre taking a new layout with the code structure, more kernellised so things will end up running a lot smoother etc which means the good looks of vista with the stability of a good professionally tweaked XP install from what i hear.

sounds like a good excuse to get another new laptop to me!

woah woah wooooooah woah..... lol

i agree tbh just i'd wait till Win7 is more than a beta test OS, when it has full support and functionality. tho the thought of buying a laptop..... oh lawdy i want one...... lol yeah..... i dont have a lappy.

Re: Windows 7

ME, hands down the worst OS on the face of this planet.

I haven't tried 7 yet because my computer doesn't even meet the minimum requirements. If its true that it uses less than XP with aero turned off then maybe I'll try it.

.:VOID:. wrote:as far as i see it it comes down to fanboyism or anti fanboyism...... i mean people like ishy and i are different in that respect. he understands that ive found what i want in an OS with windows with particular tweaks etc, i know that he's found what he wants in linux.

what i find amusing tho is that a lot of (not all, ppl will have their reasons if they have used it) ppl who havent even used vista or at least have used it but on a bad OEM installation complain and carry on.....

cast your memory back to 2003, the same thing happened with WinXP, and i'd be willing to bet that the same happened with Win2k (i dont actually gamble so dont quote me there ;) )

vista is good, started heading in a direction that could be interesting. win7 does it further and keeps things moving in a relatively lightweight package.
from what i hear when configured right (assuming that means WITHOUT using aero) Win7 uses less system resource than WinXP service pack 3. now with the improvements to the software itself i'd think its relatively safe to assume that the aero in Win7 wont take too much to deal with, lol a lot less than vista.....

/rant...

If Windows system requirements go down instead of up with Windows 7, I'll agree that it's good. :P

I myself use vista for about half an hour a day to do stuff for my job. I find it to be okay, nothing really wrong with it... But to use it as my main OS, it just lacks the configureability I need... I mean, you can't even change keyboard shortcuts (unless I missed something big). I'm one who prefers to use the mouse and keyboard rather than just the mouse :P

I just upgraded to KDE 4.2.0 on my Arch Linux system, and I can say for sure that if it keeps going like this it's gonna quickly approach a point where it can challenge Microsoft. 4.2.0 is in my opinion already better than Vista, and pretty damned easy to use even for the same kind of people as vista. The biggest challenge is probably the incompatibility of programs between the two.

But yeah, if Windows 7 doesn't have absurdly high system requirements, and possibly configureable keyboard shortcuts, that'll be a step in the right direction... Hell, if there's a free beta or something and I can run it on my systems, I might do that so I can speak from first-hand experience.

Yes I have tried them all, they all do certain things well but, none can do everything brilliantly. If you think linux is a suitable os for games then... you are very easily amused.

I work as a developer/systems analyst, if you think i want to go home and configure a computer then .... your wrong, i want to go to the pub.

Re: Windows 7

there ara nice (3d) games for linux too, but not too much, I admit
by the way I don't often play games... and if I do and linux games are not enough, I boot xp.. but I use linux for everyday usage!
