You don't have to list everyone, only those that you know well enough to know or think you know why they became mods and remain mods.

Re: To The Community: Why Are We Mods?

Honestly, I don't think we have that many moderators who are in it for the power. Mostly because there isn't any. Perhaps in the past, when the forum was structured much differently, the admin and moderators were able to use their positions to accrue influence and pursue agendas. Nowadays, however, everything about this place is set up to prevent bias and abuse. Some, myself included, might even say that it's gone too far. We have a three-tier admin system representing supposedly diverse in-game backgrounds, and so-called 'neutral' players are often given priority for positions. We also have the ombudsman, loved or loathed, to keep us all in check. The age of the forum despot is well and truly over. My advice to anybody who wants to become powerful is to either get into a major alliance and start kissing ass for all you're worth, or get a red telephone to Jason on your desk. Both methods seem to work well for some people.

As usual, Semper is right. I wanted to become a moderator because I wanted to earn the respect of the community, and become a well-liked, well-regarded SGW figure. I'm not even sure this is a good motivation, to be honest. Both here and in real life, I'm afflicted with a perverse desire to be liked by everybody. It hasn't served me well in either. Sometimes I think I need to learn the art of not giving a crap.

Re: To The Community: Why Are We Mods?

I'm going to answer a question with a question:
Why do people remain mods after they quit the game?

I'm a reformer and I believe that mods who no longer play the game actively lack a certain finesse that comes from up-to-date in-game interaction. I know this will offend people who fit this category, but there is no excuse for quitting a game while trying to hold onto power over its forums.

Play the game and read the forums, or just play the game. No if's, and's or but's.

Well, I reached a point where I felt it was time to give something back, theres no bonus in it for me, heck i dont even play anymore. :P
(the spam temple seems to be the one place that i cant just go away from, and at the time i became a mod i had a lot of free time on my hands, i thought i might try and contribute what i could.)

I understand that it seems that I dont do much, (in particular the last few weeks, irl obligations) but i do what i can. Misc isnt as active as the other areas as you know, so we rarely see the same level of content requiring modding.

to an extent I agree with you, but only in principal. Misc for example isnt purely about SGW, so that ingame player aspect isnt necessary. at the moment apart from moderating Misc also am on the Respect group leadership, none of which requires up to date knowledge of the game alliances etc, infact i guess its somewhat preferred. in this community there seems to be a trend of claiming bias about moderators, mainly between sides of the server war, and despite not directly being involved when i did play, i now have no affilliation whatsoever, and no desire/reward to favour either side.

so really, if its a subforum about ingame relations, or the game generally then yes, some knowledge may be required, and in just the same way, for someone to moderate the Anime Corner in misc, its beneficial to know of or have an interest in anime, a spam mod to know and appreciate spam, etc etc.

Re: To The Community: Why Are We Mods?

having know some of u for some time, and having close connect with one i would say:

u are mods cause u all really want to make an impact on the game, beyond hitting tab and holding enter

u have reach a point in this game where u are well know, and like it, and for some , repay that affection with service. For others they enjoy the affection, crave more, so continue to promote themselves as mods by there forum presence, be it by virtue of warnings/help/advice/and ban. In the end, they also still do it for what they believe is the good of the community, and more often than not, they are right.

u enjoy belonging to a "club of peers" and the politics that come with it.

and truly:

u like having threads that ask ..."do u like me ? " cause that is important to u to some degree ( no one wants to do a job and be hated for it, or be told they do it bad)

by the grace of God go I, that i never have to mod a on line forum, cause i have raised 3 kids already, who need hundreds more.
