He can, and Sony made it possible... Why not, especially if he doesn't have any money..

Just because he "can", doesn't mean he should break the laws just because he doesn't have any money.

That's exactly one of the arguments some $$ scammers of online games could say, just replacing Sony by whoever are their victims.

Actually i differentiate average Joe from the multi billion dollar conglomerate with wads of cash.. I'm not saying its a valid reason or an excuse but that the exploit was made possible and easy by Sony and that we have no right to judge the man (men) that did this.

I utterly disagree, also, who in the end are concerned by this hacking? The players, among which many "average Joe".

The difference being, a mmorpg $$ scammer only screws up the player(s) he scammed, the hackers here both screwed up to some extent the firm and the players, making it worse than my example.

Try telling that to all the sony gamers who can't play online atm :smt112

EDIT:

Tek, they did get creditcard information from people, it was just on the news.
Those that used credit cards with their account to purchase stuff, also got copied.

Re: Sony Got hacked

Not from PSN.

Its little difference, but the 12k credit card details theyve confirmed taken are from the SOE network.

But yeh, negates my argument quite nicely. Everything ive read up to now has been warnings of details being taken. Seems the SOE leak went under the radar as it happened around the same time as the PSN.

Over a 100 million personal identities were copied. (personal data)
If you used credit cards with your account, it was also copied.

No, it wasnt.

The unencrypted data IE home address, DOB is 100% compromised for all users.

The encrypted data, IE credit card details have only been CONFIRMED to have been taken in a small batch of 12k from the SOE.

Hmmm hearing contradicting stories now :s

Doesnt realy matter I guess, identities and credit card info was stolen, guessing the amounts are not realy important, the damage is done.
This will impact Sony's credibility and its famous 'free' network use quite a bit in the long run.

Re: Sony Got hacked

For what it's worth, none of sonys hardware was compromised from what im reading. They made the incredible decision of outsourcing data security and the info lost was held on a third partys hardware.

How you can be sony and be that dense i have no idea

Thats indeed a choice they'll be sorry about now.
Hmm, just heard that the PC users, using sony networks to play, also can't access it now :s

Dark days for Sony.

I'm curious, what if any kind of theft happens, ie credit card, identity, etc, will Sony be held accountable ?

Re: Sony Got hacked

At which point they have the expiry dates and card numbers. But they're missing the security code that 9 out of 10 retailers require. AND if you're with someone like santander they'll have to run through the secure pass system which is optional. I just hope people have opted into that, its a pain having to input your details, and a sec code, and a password just to buy something but it's worth it i the end.

My point wasnt that "oh its encrypted never mind" but the media have been scare mongering lumping the unencrypted data which was obviously under less security protocol and therefore easy to access, in with the possiblity of PSN card details being taken, and th 12k details taken from SOE to make sensational headlines about 25mil credit card details being stolen which isnt the case.

It's all shocking for sony, but it isnt on the scale people think it is. Not yet anyway. As for sonys responsibility, there is a part of the terms and conditions that absolves them from any responsibility for data loss. If you report fraudulent activity on your bank account these days within 60 days or so, it's usually reimbursed. But dont expect anything from sony.

Re: Sony Got hacked

Just to make it clear to people going on about xbox live vs psn the xbox live had quite a few accounts hijacked in 2007 I believe where MS points were stolen along with any information attached to the account. It's been tried and done on both systems.

Also, anonymous is not a group in the sense that other hacking groups are. There is no membership policy or anything of that sort, but rather anonymous picks a cause (like the attacks on the iranian government websites now) and anyone is allowed to join it. If xbox live was picked as a target, this group could just as well take it down if need be.

Realizing that both networks are penetrable, it is important to realize that Sony did take threats on their systems lightly and have paid the price in what is possibly millions of dollars lost for them. Lets just hope that Sony starts paying attention to the playstation network now as it was horribly outdated and outmatched compared to xbox live, which just makes this whole ordeal seem worse imo.
