Re: Pc Issue

I used to get the same problem, PC would overheat and shutdown. Like you first thing I did was clean and check the fans, they were bad but still worked and still overheated after cleaning.

In the end I just popped down Maplins and bought an extra high powered fan, links to the Motherboard thermostat and kicks in when things get hot, only cost £15 and 10 mins to fit.

I believe my PC desk which is an enclosed space with little ventilation is partly to blame

Limiting your processor to a lower speed will also keep it cooler. Old PCs 286, 386, even some 486 processors used to have a hardwired turbo button so you could speed up and slow down the processors. I believe you can now limit speed in the CMOS advanced setting.

When the first Pentiums came out they literally burned out from overheating, thats when people started strapping fans to the CPUs, not very high tech but it worked. Now CPUs have pretty much peaked due to heat from the resistance in more and more tightly packed and narrower circuits hence why we dont get faster processors anymore, instead we get more speed by splitting the workload over multiple processors, again not very high tech solution but it works lol

Fans were fist added to the 386 co-processor chip heatsinks by the geeks who overclocked them, by the introduction of the pentium, fans fitted to heatsinks was a well established fact ;)

EDIT: And the first CPU that required active cooling was the Intel 486 DX2-66 ;)

Well yes some geeky types did overclock processors and added their own fans to try and cool the overheating it caused but it was not standard or common.

As for 386 & 486s, I worked in a shop called Nova Computers after I left school selling and assembling PCs for a living, and although heatsinks were used we never needed CPU fans until the pentium was released.
