Anyway.. installing mods.. unlikely. :)
The Karma system is always interesting...the thanks system just seems simpler.
Yes, so much simpler that it is very boring. :P What good are 'likes' if the author does not get an overview of how many of his posts are liked by how many people (by whom, even)? :?

It does give that overview.

Ooh, epic. :-D Can you also "dislike" a post? Because there are posts that simply are not worth responding to, but do get somewhat under my skin.. disliking those would be very useful. (Anonymously, of course, because I am a chicken.) :P

There is no "dislike" function and I think that is for the best ;)
You can "unthank" a post you have already thanked though if you change your mind.

Re: "Thanks" button

Tried to hit the thanks button but there wasn't one. :(
Maybe if it's created we can leave this topic up to i can 'like' it.

P.s.
I'm all for this.

Re: "Thanks" button

There's no need for a "dislike". If you don't like it just don't thank it.

Imagine the negative values coming from the GC.

Re: "Thanks" button

Why not. We would dislike scammers, campaigning, etcetera.
The political correctness of only allowing positive feedback colours the results, and makes the system effectively 'worthless'. "Oh, 10 people liked my post!" (When in actuality, 10 people liked it, 40 people disliked it, and the other 50 do not give a nugget about it.) See how that would be a senseless statistic? ;)

That 'you can only like this' system has been popularised by Facebook and Youtube, two of the most untrustworthy sites on the entire interweb. You might hurt someone's feelings by disliking their post. :( Aww..

@Clarkey: Negativity is a part of life, and it needs proper representation. Silencing criticism by simply not allowing people to say they do not like a post is utterly undesirable censorship.

Re: "Thanks" button

Unfortunately, only J or someone with full FTP access can install mods... And considering how many mods have been installed over the years here, you all know how much J loves them... (we can remember a total count of zero installed mods)

Unfortunately, there appears not to be any such system already included, so it would have to be a mod. But as many of you know, getting that installed is less than unlikely...

Re: "Thanks" button

If the thank you system is only a one-way-stream to gather suck up and feel good about yourself points ...., then by all means.

I rather see the swing go both ways ....

It will be used as a popularity measurement tool for those who spent most of their days on the forum.
If you have done something good, a good post, or a good action, people can simply post "Thank you" , is it not ?
Or is there really need for a quick way to find out how often one if thanked ?

Incorrect, Forum admins can install mods, the only reason someone with server access would be required is if the mod required files to be placed on the server. In the case of a like button it probably would.

@Jo, I understand what you are getting at, but I also feel having a positive button only and no negative button would show more than it would having a negative button.
Imagine this, we have a positive and negative button. Anyone that doesn't like me can click negative on every single post I make, not because they don't like the content of the post, but because they don't like me as a person. That gives inaccurate statistics, especially in regards to the post.

If we have a positive only button, then only people that like the post would click it, I doubt people that like me would click every post i make. So in a way I believe a positive only button would tell us more than a positive and negative button would.

Mmhm, I see your point. Fair enough, I relinquish my position of opposition to only-positive feedback. ;)

LoL and how about the other side of that swing ... just imagine Legendary Apophis chasing after every post of yours :-D

Come to think of it ... such a system is utterly pointless.

TBH, the only reason I want it is for entertainment. I know it will entertain me! Simple things amuse me.

LMAO I wouldn't do such a thing... :smt042

Also, Youtube has the like/dislike function. Rebecca Black and her Friday song did break the record of dislikes, there! xD

I would agree with a "like" function, but for reasons Clarkey pointed out, a "dislike" would be abused.

Couldnt the same be said about a a like function ?

Just look at the rivalry with post counts ... some go out of their way to have most ... this would be another forum stat for some of our forum warriors here :-D

Re: "Thanks" button

Well, really there's only a couple of ways to look at it....

1) We don't have such a function and the forum remains as is.... :smt015

2) We do have such a function and the forum may be a tad more interesting, atleast in the short term. :smt115

Given the attention negative threads get on these here forums, I would then definitely go for a dislike button :smt047

The ACP has no such tool. It is not present in the forum code version J uses. It might be present in other versions, but not this one... So in fact it does require FTP access...
