Loopholes in the law, my friend.
And I AM serious. This is also used in money laundering (and works for property as well).
With the Mona Lisa it is a little more obvious who is the real owner though.
No one can say they bought the Mona Lisa NOT knowing that it is stolen.

...In law though, Reaper is the one who possesses the account rightfully. If I pay for something, even if it is stolen, that property is mine. If I am aware of the theft, that makes me an accomplice, but if I buy the stolen object in complete ignorance to the theft of said object, I am the rightful owner.
The thief can be prosecuted for theft and demanded to pay up damages, but the object is still mine.

That is just wrong on so many levels.
If you buy a stolen car and get handed stolen papers for the car i.e. you buy it with complete ignorance, the car will be taken from you WITHOUT any compensation.
If you pay for something, even though it is stolen, it is not your property even though it is in your possession.
If you are found with stolen goods on you, even though you didn't know they were stolen, you can be arrested if enough evidence points your way that you did in fact know that the goods were hot.
Soz, but that just had to be corrected.

And again:
If you steal a bike and then I buy it from your friend, it is NOT mine legally. If the owner reports the bike stolen and they find the bike at my house, they will take the bike from me without compensation and return it to the proper owner. It is then up to me to press charges against your friend and the owner of the bike can do the same against you if you are implicated by your friend.
